Something's going down in Seattle

Just heard on the radio. Apparently, a guy tried to get around the metal detector. Cops shouted at him to get back, he reached into his bag and pulled out something that looked like grenade. Cops opened fire, dude went down. Cops didn't let EMT's get near the guy because he might have a live grenade. They think he's dead now. I got no more details yet.

SEATTLE -- Law enforcement officers shot a man at the federal courthouse Monday after he walked into the building carrying what appeared to be a hand grenade and shouting threats, authorities said.

The man's condition was not immediately released.

The man, wearing a backback strapped to his chest, entered the lobby of the 23-story building shortly before noon, carrying what appeared to be a World War II-type grenade in his hand, Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske said.

Witnesses said he tried to get past security, began shouting threats and was then shot when confronted by police and federal agents, police spokeswoman Christie-Lynne Bonner said.

The nature of the threats was not disclosed.

Paramedics could not approach the man for more than an hour while a bomb squad checked out the backpack and found it did not contain any additional explosives.

The courthouse, a $171 million high-rise that opened last August, was evacuated and nearby streets cordoned off. The building's security features include glass walls that are blast-resistant.

No, it's not reckless. He was shouting threats and tried to avoid security. The officers believed they saw a weapon on a suspicious and threatening individual. I'd be curious to hear what your reaction would be if he had thrown a grenade into a packed courtroom.

And no, if someone has a grenade, you take him down. It will not explode from being shot. The only way it explodes is if you arm it yourself. So your choice is to take him down and let it explode on his body, killing him and perhaps injuring a few people or letting him throw it into a place where it's guaranteed to kill or hurt more people.

But what if the guy has enough strength left to pull the pin? He's gonna be mighty pissed if you shoot him, and is gonna wanna take everybody down with him. Guess you'd better get in some headshots.

Or if he pulled the pin already, before he throws it at you. Better it explodes in his face, than him getting to throw it at you, and he gets away.
