Something wrong with NIC card on Win 98 SE Desktop

I've tried connecting straight to the internet through cable modem and through a router, neither works . . .

what are some troubleshooting steps?

Assuming that your Router is configured correctly and DHCP is On.

Forget for few minutes the Internet thingie.

Connect the computer to the Router and bring it first to a level that the computer is capable to obtain an IP and connect to the Router?s menus.

In order for the above to work.

1. The NIC has to be installed correctly and have No Device Manager Ghosts or conflicts.
2. The CAT5e cable has to be Good.
3. TCP/IP has to installed and configured correctly on your computer.

Could try popping the NIC into a different slot in the PC (unless it's on the motherboard). Also I'd pick up another network care (<$10) and pop that in and see if it works. It's possible the NIC is dead and a simple swap would help determine that. If it's a Plug N Play NIC you can uninstall it from Windows, reboot, and see if Windows finds it again and reinstalls it.
