ugh. we wanted to play wii play and maybe some bowling today. turn it on an dthrow in a disk. get a "can't read disk" error ok no problem. take it out and clean it. Put it back in and it starts makeing a nasty sound. so i take the disk out and turn it off.

grab a diffrent disk and try Same crap happens. can't read disk then after trying agian it makes a really nasty sound (kinda like a clicking type sound).

ugh the wii is just over a year old. i am slightly ticked.

Sounds like you might need to get the dics drive replaced. I got mine done a few months back. It would give me occasional disk read errors and would click while playing. Nintendo support was really good about it. There was a service center about 30 mins away from me to I dropped it off at lunch one day and it was done withint an hour.

Did you register your Wii to get the 3 month extension?

And yeah, your topic title and username LOL!!!

There's been some talk recently about the Wii's DVD drive being especially sensitive to dust. And, no, I'm not trying to make any funny statements regarding Wiis collecting dust. I've actually seen it discussed recently. See here: Link

You may just need to use some sort of DVD drive lens cleaner disc or try to blow it out with canned air.

The same thing happened to my Wii back in January (bought May 2007), and I'm still waiting to get a Wii back that works.

I sent it in on Jan 25th for the first time. They replaced my disc drive in the Wii, but the Wii was damaged when I got it back (it was scratched, dirty, case had a crack in it, and it had a screw sticking out of it. The UPS box that it was sent in looked great though, so I don't know what happened.). I called Nintendo about it, and they told me to send it in again and that time they replaced it with a remanufactured system. I got that system back on Wednesday, and the Wii want even take a game disc in. It just makes a buzz saw like sound and scratches the disc. So now I'm on repair 3. This time they offered to send me a new Wii with the 1 year + 3 month warranty extension. I just hope this one works.

I'll have to say that I have had horrible luck with the Wii repairs so far, but each time I've had to call Nintendo the call center is excellent. It horrible though cause I still want have the Wii back in time for Brawl, and thats the game I have been waiting on.

Hopefully you have better luck getting your Wii repaired/replaced.

Almost the same happend to me.. 1st wii died due to the wiiconnect / overheating deal.. They sent me a refurb that died within the week. 3rd one eventually got the same disc read errors as OP, Im on my 4th "repair" now, so far so good with this one.

This thing is making my launch 360 look reliable in comparison 😉 I will say though, at least Nintendo's customer service seems reliable. I didnt have to call them 3x to initiate a return like with M$.

Did you check the disc for laser burn? Dunno why but we had a wii play disc and it looked immaculate except for this solid thin ring around the disc which made the disc unable to... well play. We took it into Gamestop and they said it is common for upright machines to damage the disc with their lasers.

friggin lasers

Glad to hear it. Much better than a dead drive 🙂

My Wii already went through this exact scenario that the op explained. I didn't use my Wii for a while and it was making the sounds and DRE so just used my can of compressed air and VIOLA it worked fine. Now I know to spray it at least every couple uses just to be sure.

not sure i want to do that.

called back and got it knocked down to $25. but sent a email and got a canned one back saying to call and they will reduce it more.

I think $75 is the standard fee they charge for Wii repairs/replacements. Did you register your Wii online to get the 3 month extension?

Good luck getting it repaired/replaced. When you get your Wii back it will have a 1 year warranty in case anything else goes wrong with it. Make sure when you send it off to tell them to transfer your Miis, Saves, and VC Games over just in case you don't get your system back.

Gah, I thought all these Wii = penises jokes were finished a year ago.

either way, nintendo is doing free dust cleaning, I would suggest contacting them.

*edit : I guess that is only in japan. Not sure what to suggest other than paying the $75

Kinda sad that wii play or bowling are your best options at this point in the game.

OMG SHUT UP YOU GOD DAMN WII TROLL.

QFT

Could one of the mods check his login IP's and see if they correspond to Microsoft or Sony corp? His trolling is beyond pathetic at this point.

Instead of using an aircan to blow air inside the Wii (really just shuffles the dust around and if there is a lot of dust it will probably land on the lens agai), I would try vacuuming it out.

I still dont get the viagra joke, but I am not trying hard (no pun) to figure it out.🙂
