Alright my PC has been locking up for some unkown reason, I thought it was some program I installed so I reinstalled XP but it still would lock up as soon as I would start Prime95 torture test. I decided to underclock the processor, so I changed the fsb to 100 and now it will run torture test just fine with it topping out at 44C. I didn't think it was due to heat because the max temp it would show on MBM was 48C which should be fine for an XP 1700, is the CPU just bad?



XP 1700+ @ default speed
SK-6 with 7000 rpm Delta and a 36cfm Delta case fan also blowing down on it
Epox 8KHA+
128mb Crucial PC2100
Voodoo 3 3000
WD 30GB 7200rpm hdd
WinXP Pro

I got the replacement processor today and it is running perfect, so the problem was the CPU.




 
what kind of power suppy do you have? also in my opinion you should be running more than 128 MB of ram under XP! why dont you reboot and check to see how much ram your pc is using right after reboot! this could be your problem also!
 
you didn't say you overclocked the voltage along with the fsb, voltage could be your problem. It has been mine in the past.
 
Nothing has been overclocked, everything was at stock speed. I underclocked the fsb to see if the problem was the speed the processor was running at and it was. Right now it is running fine at 1.1ghz, it is supposed to be at 1.47. The powersupply is an Enhance 300w, it came with the Evercase from Newegg. I know it's not because of the ram, I have another system running XP with 64mb of ram just fine. After booting, rambooster shows 100+mb of ram free and I always have some free according to rambooster.
 
It's not your CPU my friend...

What kind of drivers are you using? Make sure you get the latest drivers from the internet. Also, if you are using any USB, disable them and see if it still crashes. If your CPU temp is under 60C, it shouldn't crash. If it still crashes, take out everything from your case and reinstall them.

And may I suggest you get another video card? 🙂 Come on, you have an Athlon XP now. Don't make your CPU cry
 
I disabled all usb devices then put it back to default speed and it froze a few seconds into torture test. I then took everything out of the case and put it back in and it still froze a few seconds into torture test. I put the fsb down to 125 this time and torture test is running right now just fine, whenever I put the fsb to 133(default) it freezes a few seconds into torture test.

All the drivers are WinXP default and I'm gonna be buying a new videocard when the Ti 4200 comes out, I know this Voodoo 3 is pathetic but it gets the job done most of the time.
 
Well I guess I spoke too soon, it froze up at 125 fsb(1375mhz) after about five minutes of running torture test. When I restarted the post codes on the motherboard showed a failed overclock, I'm actually underclocking the processor, so I cleared the cmos and have it running at 100 fsb(1100mhz) right now. Could this be a problem with the motherboard?
 
Hey brudda ECCp cruncher 🙂 Try running with fail-safe bios settings, if that stabilizes the system then you'll know where to troubleshoot the problem from. If it doesn't resolve the crashes then try bumping the Vcore alittle as it can help increase fault tolerance, And hurry up because I'm right behind you now 😉
 
I loaded fail safe defaults and it still froze a few seconds into Prime95 torture test. I also raised the voltage .75 and it froze again a few seconds into torture test. I also ran sisoft sandra to check the ram and it seemed just fine, but when I closed sisoft the PC restarted. Maybe the ram could be the problem.
 
125MHz bus is no help, thta puts the PCI bus at 41.6 Mhz, and if the divisor for AGP is not set at 1/4, than AGP could be running at 83. Easy for either of these to lock up a pc.

Yeah, didn't think of that. It still won't run Prime95 at default speed though. I really don't think it's the memory, I tested it for 10 minutes on Memtest-86 and memtest and 0 errors showed up on both. I guess I'll just have to RMA it to Newegg, the only problem is if it is the motherboard the 30 day warranty will probably be up by the time I get the processor back.
 
Yeah, they aren't the greatest but they worked fine on the old PC and I don't see why they would effect the processor at 1.47ghz but not at 1.1. I've started the RMA process through Newegg, so hopefully I'll have a new processor in a week.
 
i had lots of lockups in win2k, but recently reinstalled and this time, instead of getting the newest greatest wiz-bang drivers, i just downloaded the detonators that windows update had, and thats it. no 4in1's, nothing else.

no more lockups 🙂
 
I had all the windows updates for XP and no I didn't have any other ram to try, everyone I know has either RD or SDRAM. I did try the ram in the other slots, but that didn't make a difference.
