something wrong with my car

recently, i was backing into a spot and noticed a squealing noise when i back up. then later, i noticed a squealing noise when i was in drive also. the noise went away whenever i applied the brakes. a friend of mine said i need to change my brakepads. is that correct? i believe the noises are coming from the front drivers side... i dont know if that is of any importance tho. any insight would be appreciated.

by the way, i drive a 93 accord.

Yes. One thing I did to get it to go away for a few days was to drive with the brake halfway down... But I don't think thats too smart...

I've never heard of breakpads squeeking when you're not stepping on the break pedal. Sounds like wheel hubs/bearings to me. They may need to be greased or replaced.

yah.. usually they squeal when you apply your brakes.. a piece of metal surfaces in the pad when it's worn down. this is designed to let you know when your pads need to be replaced.

Are you positive it's coming from your wheel area? how's your power steering fluid level?

It is without a doubt your pads. I think the 93 Accord has squealers on it. When the brake pad starts to get low, there are 2 pieces of metal that rub against you rotors. It a constant, annoying little reminder to get new pads.

P.S. It is also a god idea to have them check your rotors and turn them(smooth them a little on a lathe) if you're having someone do it anyway

hmm... i will take off the wheel later and try to see if it is the pads. hope my effort will need to stop right there :p

Brakes need replacing. You should check the rotors and bearings too while you're at it. Easy to do it yourself.

Sounds like bad calipers to me, try the pads first though. Turn/replace the rotors also.

Possibly... paired with worn pads... that would explain the squeek - if the calipers were sticking the brakes would wear quicker and get to the wear indicators.. he's just noticing it.
Pull the calipers and polish off any rust spots on the pistons when you're replacing the pads.. Put some high temp grease there to keep them from sticking.
