Something wont allow a antivirus program to be run.

A computer at work that is running windows XP allows any antivirus program to be installed, but something happens after that and they cannot be run. The exe file seems to vanish.

Is there a trojan or virus going around that is known to do this?

1) get the computer off the network and isolated ASAP

2) there are zillions of viruses that could do that, probably several new ones every day

3) you should find out what the virus was, so you know what damage it might've done and where your security strategy fell short. But the right thing to do is to burn that Windows installation to the ground afterwards, then set the system up securely next time.
