Something to think about as you receive your paycheck....

Cut and Pasted from an email I received...

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a
Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting
taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the federal government to "put away,"
you may be interested in the following:
Q: Which party took Social Security
from an independent fund and put it in the general fund so that Congress
could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic-controlled House and
Senate.

Q: Which party put a tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic party.

Q: Which party increased the tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic Party with Al Gore casting the deciding vote.

Q: Which party decided to give money to immigrants?
A: That's right, immigrants moved into this country and at 65 got SSI
Social Security. The Democratic Party gave that to them although they never
paid a dime into it.

Then, after doing all this, the Democrats turn around and tell you the
Republicans want to take your Social Security.

And the worst part about it is, people believe it!

Pass it on please!

2004 Election Issue This must be an issue in "04". Please! Keep it
going.

SOCIAL SECURITY: (This is worth the read. It's short and to the
point.)

Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during election years. Our
Senators and Congress men &women do not pay into Social Security and, of
course, they do not collect from it.

You see, Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of
their rare elevation in society. They felt they should have a special plan
for themselves. So, many years ago they voted in their own benefit plan.

In more recent years, no congressperson has felt the need to change
it. After all, it is a great plan.

For all practical purposes their plan works like this: When they
retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die, except it may
increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments.

For example, former Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their wives
may expect to draw $7,800,000.00 (that's Seven Million, Eight-Hundred
Thousand Dollars), with their wives drawing $275,000.00 during the last
years of their lives. This is calculated on an average life span for each.

Their cost for this excellent plan is $00.00. Nada. Zilch. This little
perk they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick up the tab
for this plan. The funds for this fine retirement plan come directly from
the General Funds-our tax dollars at work!

From our own Social Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid)
into-every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our
employer) --we can expect to get an average $1,000 per month after
retirement. Or, in other words, we would have to collect our average of
$1,000. monthly benefits for 68 years and one (1) month to equal Senator
Bill Bradley's benefits!

Social Security could be very good if only one small change were made.

That change would be to jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan from
under the Senators and Congressmen. Put them into the Social Security plan
with the rest of us ... then sit back and watch how fast they would fix it.

If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be
planted and maybe good changes will evolve.

Yawn all you want. Rome burnt while your kind slept anyway.
It's something the 20 somethings need to think about.
The 30 somethings should be seriously thinking about....
and us 40 somethings should be doing something about.

I think it's just as relevant as the other quasi- politically charged topics here.
If a MOD disagrees, that's their perogative.

Feel free to pass this on if you want to perpetuate a falsehood useful for painting a political target as money-grubbing.

Speaking as a 40 something, I am doing something about it. I'm not counting on it at all. I'm making my retirement plans to be without it.

Thank you for the links.
Interesting reading the "other side" of the story.

I knew I could count on the ATOT effect to point out any irregularities.

No one forced you to click on the topic , either.
Get over it.

Well...like the topic gave away what's inside.

As a 20something I think SS needs to be eliminated. I am not a socialist and resent being forced to pay into a wealth redistribution program.

Aside from being in the wrong forum, you might want to research these things before you forward them... A quick check at snopes would show you that congress began paying and drawing from social security several years ago. As for the others, I haven't taken time to research them.

I notice no MOD has said anything , so your opinion as to the placement of this thread topic is simply that,Your opinion.
Please note my response above to the link from Snopes/C-span.
I would ask you to consider the fact that the purpose of the web, and forums such as this one in particular, is for the exchange of ideas and information and it is not possible to "know" all things about a particular topic.
Subsequent to my original post, I have been informed of the nature of the inaccuracy of the original email I received and quoted here.
Please note my thanks for the link to the snopes thread / C-span link.
This is the first time I've seen Snopes.com, thank you very much.

Get over the placement in this particular forum. The relevant response I have received have done what I was looking for, to wit, either verified or debunked the original post.

Riiiight......

You might as well have posted:

I HATE DEMOCRATS, THEY SUCK!

I HATE DEMOCRATS, THEY SUCK!

Because that's all your post conveys. It does not attempt to raise awareness of social security issues, the whole point is to attempt to make the democratic party look bad.

If you really wanted to try and improve the state of social security in this country, you'd try educating people about what's wrong with it's current state, and telling them where they can go to voice thier disapproval. Instead you try and cast blame on the political party you don't like.

The second half of the post isn't even about social security, it's about a congressional pension plan. It does at least have the advantage of actually talking about that pension plan, rather than saying "Democrats are evil, they want to steal your money!"
