I started out in a very bad neighborhood and never gained the fear that other city slickers seem to hold for shady sides of town. You are probably not going to go unmolested frequenting shady areas, but in no way should you hold a prejudice of everyone in those parts of town. On the same flip of the coin I wouldn't wander in the dark of night into any of the alleyways of Rome - or any other big city for that matter. If the cops won't go there, perhaps you shouldn't either. Some things are just common sense.
