Something that's bothered me for a long time

Every now and then I keep slipping back into this question, because for some reason it seriously bothers me. There was a thread on P&N some time back where they were talking about the decline of truck sales. What really irritated me is all the Ford fanboys who kept crawling out of the woodwork to point out how Ford sold the most trucks. One of these very people posted the following:

[/b]

2007 Truck Sales

Ford F-Series: 690,589
Chevy Silverado: 618,257
Dodge Ram: 358,295
GMC Sierra: 208,243
Toyota Tundra: 196,555
Nissan Titan: 65,746

Now, what bothered me was the following; shouldn't the Sierra and the Silverado be listed here COMBINED under "GM Trucks" for a total of 886,500, putting it in the lead by a 10% margin? Or am I missing something blatant here and just don't get it?

Sorry for re-hashing something so old, but this shit has always bothered the hell out of me and I'd like some clarification to make it one less thing that comes back to haunt me when I've got nothing better to do than sit around and think of useless shit.

It's all a technicality. Because they Sierra and Silverado are "technically" different models, their sales figures are not combined. It has long been known that the Silverado and Sierra combined sell more than the F-Series.

Honestly, this all falls under the old category of lies, damned lies, and statistics.

There are plenty of GM vehicles that should be consolidated so they don't compete with each other, but that's GM's problem, not Ford's, and while it's true that GM is selling more trucks than the other manufacturers, Ford is selling more trucks than the other brands.

The sad a part is that Ford used to sell almost a million of those things every single year, thats even kind of difficult to imagine.

Hmm. Decent link, though you have to pick it apart a bit to eliminate garbage like the Avalanche and SUV's. So, essentially..

2007 Truck Sales

Ford F-Series: 690,589
Chevy Silverado: 618,257
Dodge Ram: 358,295
GMC Sierra: 208,243
Toyota Tundra: 196,555
Nissan Titan: 65,746

vs.

2008 Truck Sales
GM Trucks: 633,622
Ford F-Series: 515,513
Dodge Ram: 245,840
Toyota Tundra: 137,249
Nissan Titan: 34,053

Titan down almost 50%. :Q

Wow...Ford is down to selling not much more than a half million F150's...wow that is a drop. Wasn't it like 1 million a year in the early 2000's? Crazy.

It's confused me for years now. You'd think that having a consolidated sales number that put them on top of the charts with an unchallenged "#1 rating" would be valuable. More valueable than badge engineering and diluting down your sales numbers between two brand names.

I've never understood the purpose of GMC other than the dealer network must pay some major royalties or franchise fees back to GM Corporate to keep in existance.

i wonder how much is due to crappy economy and how much is due to putting off sales with the december launch of the *new* ram and *newish* f-series?

gives caddy, buick, and pontiac dealers out in the sticks a truck to sell. they're also usually nicer inside than chevys, though that doesn't have to be true.

I used to work with a guy who was a die hard Chevy guy. He owned a Suburban and after it seized a bearing while he was towing a trailer he took it back to Chevy but they wouldn't warranty it so he started making phone calls saying what a loyal customer he was and threatening to buy GMC vehicles from then on. I always thought that was hilarious...what a hollow threat.

What's really funny is that he drives a Hyundai now. 😛

Remember $4.00 gas back in the summer? That is likely the biggest culprit.

Interestingly pickuptrucks.com says the Sierra and Silverado perform pretty differently.

Looks like they compared different models.. and that chart is hard to read, is smaller better or bigger? I'm too tired to try and figure it out.

I'd be interested to see how the compact pickup market has held up. Anyone have numbers for those models?

That explains why I cant get parts for my damn S-10.
Those things had a horrible reputation but it doesnt seem like Chevy gained any ground by moving to the Colorado. Looks like folks just dont trust them to make small pickups any more. They dont even support the Colorado very well. I think such a beast may disappear and be replaced by medium SUV's.
