OpenOffice is probably your best bet. Or you could find a copy of Works which includes Word (if you didn't want to spill out for Office). WordPerfect is a good alternative as well. But money is money and OpenOffice is free. :)

Abiword. Its small, runs on old equipment, and can be set to save as .doc. OO is a slow hog if you don't have a pretty good system.

Abiword or Openoffice.org. Abiword is just a word proccessing program and it does a great job. However OpenOffice is a complete MS Office replacement (except for access),

I used OpenOffice for a couple of months in conjunction with office xp. I then moved completely to office when i picked up Office 2003 student/teacher.

it was good, although i recall a few errors importing MS office documents.

How about "notepad" then?

Or maybe we can descend all the way into the dark ages and go with "type writer + whiteout."

Also check out 602PC Suite.
Or if you don't mind spending a little more (albeit less than you would for MS) WordPerfect is consistently a step ahead of the rest.
