Most people accept that racism is wrong. Hating a race based on the color of your skin is not acceptable. Ive now noticed a new type of racism. Ill call it WhereYouLiveism. Hating people based on where you live. I see alot of hate for people who live in the south. Ive seen this as well against people who live in California. The worst part about this is it seems acceptable.

What do you guys think about it.

It's not new, people have been hating on people from other regions for a long time, worldwide.

I think it has more to do with people's class (high, middle, low) rather than where they live exactly.

It's not that I hate southerners per say. It's just that I hate rednecks, no matter where they live. I can't help that they happen to be highly concentrated in the south.

Possible. I see alot of "I hate the south, full of hicks". That is what im talking about. It could be that the hate is geared toward the fact that alot of people who live down there are republicans.

as flxnimprtsmcl shows its just another way to hate. but it is also a form of racism.

People always have, and always will, find some distinction to separate "us" and "them", be it color, wealth, location, religion, sexual preference, etc, and use that as a basis to make themselves feel superior.

My wife will tell you...I'm not prejudiced...I hate everyone equally...(but some are more equal than others.)

Ding, ding.

Making generalizations is, whether or not anyone likes it, natural. If you've met 12 people from Canada, and they've all been pricks, you're likely to assume the next Canadian you meet will be a prick. Substitute ANYTHING for Canadian in that sentence - nationality, skin color, job title, the car they drive, the clothes they wear (or even HOW they wear them). This is true even if they're the same nationality/skin color/whatever as you are.

It's natural - part of human behavior. It's called learning.

It becomes racism (by it's popular, if not literal definition) if you allow these assumptions (or prejudices, if you will) to dominate your interaction with the person - not allowing them a shot to prove you wrong - or giving them the same chances you would anyone else to do so.

prejudice
-noun
1. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.

Edit: for the record, every Canadian I've met has been quite pleasant. Therefore, I'm prejudiced toward Canadians.

People can do something about where they live, but they can't do something about their race. That's why it's acceptable. And there IS a fair correlation between where you live and certain things.

ie:
There's a neighborhood near me where the house prices are between $1M and 2M. If you live there, there's a high probability that you're a yuppie.
There's another neighborhood near me where you can get a house for about $89k. (this is California, remember) It's the ghetto. Most people live there because that's all they can afford.

Example:
"Showcase" house in the ghetto: http://homes.realtor.com/reale...o-ca-95817-1088620890/
Yuppieville: http://homes.realtor.com/reale...s-ca-95762-1091258569/
