Something is running in the background that is killing my laptop's resources constantly...

Hello,

It's actually a friends laptop. It's one of those typical deals where the laptop is in complete disrepair: spyware, viruses, and just overall messy situation. These are the things I've done, which usually works:

- Deleted Norton, installed AVG (save resources), found three viruses, cleaned them. Rescanned, no viruses.

- installed Ad-Aware, tons of spyware, removed it, rescanned, all gone.

- installed and ran CC Cleaner, hundreds of registry errors fixed, etc.

- installed SP2.

Now, with all that said, I dropped her resources down from almost 300MB, to under 200MB. Saved over 10GB of space from junk files, and other benefits.

The problem I'm having is the fact that despite all that, the laptop runs slow as hell. So I opened up the resources manager, and it became quite clear. There is something running, and I cannot figure out what, that causes this machine to choke, every 5 seconds or so. If I could show you a picture of the CPU usage history, it would look like an EKG where it's at 20-30% at low (which is still high) and then spikes up to 80-100%. It repeats this, endlessly.

I've gone through MSCONFIG and re ran everything, so I know its not spyware or a virus.

Does anyone know what I should do next? Thanks much!

No idea personally, but you should be willing to accept that if a realistic solution is not found, a reformat might be necessary.

If it were my PC, it would have been the first thing I'd have done.

The spyware program you used is not the "sharpest tool in the shed". You need to ran Spy Sweeper or Spyware Doctor. And then Defrag.

Go to Task Manager > Proccess, sort by CPU usage, and see what file is showing the erratic CPU usage. You can Google the filemane to find out what the file is/does.

Run HijackThis and go through the results, something might pop out at you. There are also plenty of sites where you can submit your HijackThis log for them to take a look at.

Edit: also what SuperSix recommended. Sort by CPU.

I did that and I found that the System Idle Process is taking a huge junk of CPU usage. 70% right now, constantly. of a fresh boot.

What should I do?

System Idle Processs is nothing. When your CPU is completely idle, it should be at 99-100%. It's not an actual process that is taking up CPU cycles.

You are actually using up "only" 30% of your CPU.

How much RAM does this laptop have and what are the specs? Maybe just running AVG and other tray programs are taking up these resources.

It's not the RAM, as the usage is low, as it should be. She has a 2.6ghz celeron and 512MB of RAM

If that's the case, then there is nthing on that list that is causing the problem.
