Something I noticed... Intel/Prescott/Netburst/etc.

I was just reading up on TECs, which led me to Joule heating, which led me to James PRESCOTT Joule.

This cracked me up, as previously I'd just read the short article on Joule Heating.
[Wikipedia[/i]
In electronics, and in physics more broadly, Joule heating or ohmic heating refers to the increase in temperature of a conductor as a result of resistance to an electrical current flowing through it.

At an atomic level, Joule heating is the result of moving electrons colliding with atoms in a conductor, whereupon momentum is transferred to the atom, increasing its kinetic energy (see heat).

Joule heating is named for James Prescott Joule, the first to articulate what is now Joule's law, relating the amount of heat released from an electrical resistor to its resistance and the charge passed through it.

When similar collisions cause a permanent structural change, rather than an elastic response, the result is known as electromigration.

And there's Prescott.

And Intel's P4 chip is Prescott.

Heat. Resistance? Extremely hot?

Get it?

Sorry. May have been a tad stupid, but I thought I'd point it out...

Prescott is also the name of a city in the middle of Arizona..another heat referance for Prescott..

Or Prescott, Oregon. Not sure who makes up the code names for the processors but with names like Tualatin, Willamette (sp?) and Nehalem, (all places in Oregon), I would guess someone has some facination with the state. However, I have no idea where Conroe, Yonah and Dothan came from.

TD, though you've got the real reason why they picked Prescott out [most likely, anyway.]; it's just slightly ironic.

I do not know if AMD and Intel do it the same way(It is probable though), but Microsoft uses codenames from everyday things that are usually either in the Microsoft Campus or near it. Longhorn, Whistler, ect... they are all names relating to something around the campus. I believe Longhorn was named after a restaurant that is within seeing distance from the Campus. One of their codename schemes for two pieces of software that were supposed to work with each other(I do not recall which ones) was Beavis and Butthead. Supposedly, the Beavis software became canceled, so they eventually had to work for a few years on a piece of software and refer to it as Butthead.

I don't believe it has anything to do with Microsoft's campus.

Since XP, all the codenames have had to do the town of Whistler, BC, Canada, which is apparently where design retreats for XP were held.

For example, Longhorn is named after a bar there :)

Guess where the city of Cedar Mill is located? ;)

This Oregon naming scheme seems to have started with the single-core desktop procesors after the Coppermine PIII

Well heres Conroe

"In the mid 1880's the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway extended its Navasota Montgomery spur eastward through the town, which thus became the only junction of major rail lines in the county. A lumber boom beginning in the late nineteenth century in the Piney Woods of eastern and central Montgomery County attracted scores of settlers to Conroe. In 1889, Conroe replaced Montgomery as the county seat. A residence donated by Isaac Conroe served as a temporary courthouse until a permanent brick structure could be erected in 1891."

Its in colorado.

Come on, you guys should know that one of Intel's Major fabs is located in Oregon. Thats where they design many of the processes these chips are using. They mostly focus on the future products which is why the names come out of Oregon. (I know many of you won't believe me but my dad is a senior manager of one of the teams there). Oh and the names of the new chips (Merom, Conroe etc.) are not named after anywhere in the US. They are named from places in Israel I believe since that is the location of the team that made the new chips.

Banias, Dothan, and Yonah were named in Isreal, don't know about Presler, but somebody already pointed out that Cedar Mill is in Oregon as well. I think Prescott, AZ is more fitting for the Prescott core anyway considering the temps it runs at..

they used to use rivers/mountains as the names.

the p2-233/266 were the klamath, the .25 micron versions the deschutes, the p3 slot 1 was katmai, and then coppermine, etc.
