something I find annoying in CS:S

I just got into playing counter-strike source. One gripe I have with it is that when I mouse over a player it takes a second or so for the enemy/friend text to display. Since it only takes a few shots to die, I find that I usually don't have enough time to figure out if I should be shooting or not and either end up being killed or killing a teammate. Is there any way to speed up the prompt, or does anyone have any tips that may help me distinguish the bad guys easier?

Are the completely different skins and sizes of teams not enough? ;) That info is rather instant for me, I never had a problem. Of course, I usually notice the difference in clothing...but that's just me. The CTS heads are bigger cuz the skin has a helmet. And usually the Ts carry their guns down by their hips or gut, where the CTs have them up higher on the shoulders or chest height.

It's hard to tell when the player is further away. I guess I will just have to keep playing, I'm sure it will come naturally after more practice

I have the same problem jfall..when people are far away I really find it hard to tell the difference, and usually end up dead. I just turned my brightness all the way up(but that was today so I haven't had time to notice a difference), so try that. Although I'm gonna see if I can notice the things gorcorps just said and maybe identify em a bit faster.

It takes training of your eyes (and a lot of playing ;)) to notice the different ways the guns are held. You'll get it eventually. The skins have changed a lot since release, it used to be really hard to tell them apart, but now is slightly better.

CT's look a bit darker, since they have sleeves and a dark green tactical suit, where T's have no sleeves, a beanie instead of a helmet, and white pants, and a blue shirt.

...you get used to it ;)

This is only a problem on FF-on servers. On FF-off servers I just shoot at any movement. Hell...sometimes I do that on FF-on servers....I can be a bit jumpy sometimes.

You're right though, I personally thought they made it HARDER with the last skin update to tell the difference because the Ts have a bit darker clothing now and seem to match the CTs in shape a bit more. (IMO) And the did an update a little while back where they increased the popup delay from instant to some amount of time. I personally think we should get NO popup for enemies and an instant popup for friendlies.

You can use radar but that doesn't always help much (btw...is there a way to move the radar position? I'd like it to be at the bottom center of the screen not the top left).

There is a way, it involves editing some game file... I can't remember how but I've seen it done. I'll search around.

EDIT: I found this little app to customize the HUD (fonts, colors, radar, w/e)

Yeah, the annoying thing is they change the models like every other patch, so as soon as you start getting used them, they look completely different. The new ones are the worst, since they are both mostly black. It helps to look at the radar a lot.

A High-Explosive grenade that is directly under you doesn't take 50% of your life away IRL either. :p

yup your supposed to rely on looks not the text. it just takes practice. its not impossible or something. personally i like ff servers. adds an extra level of skill. less spray and pray noobs. and yea keep an eye on radar and shape of models...the head is a dead give away...

I'm not on a counter terrorism squad IRL, and if I was my fellow members likely wouldn't be a bunch of gotard 12 year olds like on most CS servers...so that is quite irrelevant!

This was actually a part of an update awhile ago. So it was harder to see someone a little bit hidden. Before you you couldn't see somone ins the disance you your X hair just moused over them their tag would pop up making it so hidding was worthless.
Not sureif you guys are playing on servers where FF is on but its really fun then hehe. It just takes that much more concentration and involvment not to accidently HS a team mate ha.

yeah but the servers I've played on with FF it probably took 2-3 headshots to kill a teamate.

Regardless, you don't want to be headshotted during the game by a teammate.... even worse in a scrim/match. ;)

I've always wondered...you'd think the terrorists would wear more than a beanie on their head...hmm...i think they should be bright pink to stand out (CT could be bright green)...

But yes, its hard at first, and even after a while sometimes. you get used to it though. and always zoom if you have a chance, that will help you tell.
