When I was young I was always told by teachers, parents and friends to study hard, go to college and get a great job. This 'great job' was always the end at which I was to aim my efforts, everything else was merely the means to hit the target, and once I hit the target, I would have succeeded and thus be a contented and happy person.

Never have I been contented with the many positions I have held which most would consider ' good jobs'. Though I make a good salary, they would sap my will to live and leave me too tired to pursue a TRUE end.

I simply have resolved to change the equation. Instead, I will now consider my job as only a means to a more desirable end; that of pure knowledge. I will get a job to supply my basic needs but requires very little effort outside of my shift, so I have more time and energy to devote to purely intellectual matters. The Aristotelian ideal as it were.

Cliffs:
I obtained a position at Starbucks.

i don't work hard to earn a lot of money and be "successful"

I work the bare minimum so I can have as much free time as possible in the prime of my life (now) with my family and also have time to do what I want to do.

Money=/success.

i also have a problem with the teachers that preach this as if a job is guaranteed out of college.

Legitimate matters.

For instance, I never had a full grasp of Calculus when in school. I wish to change that.

I also plan to read more of the classics of western literature.

I have always wanted to be well versed in all Philosophical debates.

Attempt to understand, mathematically, Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.

Basic Electronics knowledge. I have always wanted to get into HAM radio's too.

Stuff like that.

Sounded pretty good, but the Starbucks makes it sound like a humorous post. Good for you though.

I want us all to look deep inside today. I want us to think about the activities and preoccupations that fill our lives. I want us all to think about the major preoccupation. Is it our family? Our school? Our social-life? What is taking up the largest chunk of our lives? I firmly believe that all of us have some vacuum inside us that, like all other vacuums, calls for air. But this vacuum is not like a natural vacuum, it is a spiritual one. It needs to breathe the air of commitment. Look to your life and that of those around you. You will find that we have all adopted some "religion" which we believe in and work for in order to accomplish some final aim - a form of paradise.

filling the "void"

Its worth a read.

So you desire to be a life long academic?
Go back to school, get your Phd and become a professor. You will never have to leave that warm fuzzy world of academia.

by week's end, you'll be crashing on your couch after the shift, light up a bowl to mask the smell of coffee, and play more Halo than you've every played before.

It all sounds good when planning, but if you never had the tendency to care before, it's likely you won't now.

GL to you though :p
