Something better than a soundbar for a sensible price?

So I'm tired of the tinny, crap sounding speakers built in to my TV. There are two possible ways that we may set up the room: one that results in a 10 foot viewing distance, and the other with a 15 foot viewing distance.

I'd like to spend around $300 or less. So far, I'm thinking about the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 computer speakers, which go for about $150.

Any other ideas? Is a soundbar really the way to go? The idea of a sound "bar" makes no sense to me. Two speakers, yes.

so just go with 2 speakers? Sound bars suck.

I wouldn't say sound bars suck as they sound a whole lot better than tv speakers but there not better than a nice 2.1 setup or 5.1.

I have a Vizio VSB200 sound Bar w/ a Sony Subwoofer and i can sound it sounds pretty good especially compared to the tv speakers. Its give a nice cinematic effect that feels like a 5.1 setup even though its not. I would say just go for a nice sound bar and try it out and if your not pleased just return it. Walmart has the Vizio VSB200 for $80 so you could try that.

I can't do 5.1 due to wires for the rear speakers. Stereo is fine; music fidelity is a main concern. But I do appreciate you suggesting an actual product.

I have had an Onkyo 6.1 system for about 10 years, and haven't use the rear speakers in 4 years. I figure the kids will grow up eventually! Still sounds pretty good as a 3.1, and I don't have to buy anything later when I want my surround back.

My parents have a sound bar with sub, and it sounds pretty good. The only thing I don't like about those is that I think the set the cut off wrong on the sub (it comes on too high), but that's more of a personal thing. At least with a receive you can adjust that as well.

Just food for thought. You have a lot of options available.

probably right around 300 shipped
^^^^^^ this

Or even a cheapish T-amp instead of the AVR if you really want to go cheap.
