Isn't Obama set to spend like $81 billion on new choppers for himself?

Blame that boondoggle on Bush. He is the one who started the process way before Obama ever got elected.

(OK, the design/planning process started during the Bush administration...not necessarily BY Bush himself)

Aren't there a multitude of different choppers that can be called 'Marine 1'?

Yep. I think they are ordering 20 of them.

Wait, they're getting some new ones? I thought they had a bunch of different model choppers for different situations that could have the Marine 1 designation.

Just like Air Force One is any USAF aircraft the President is on, Marine One is any USMC aircraft as well. They can use any different helicopter at any time. And big deal, what is anyone going to do with this information anyway?

Only an idiot would blame Obama for this program. The the decision to build it, the design, the selection, and all of the cost overruns occured under Bush.

So Obama can't say no?

It gets complicated. How much of that $81 billion has been sunk already. Getting rid of it now might just piss away billions of dollars without getting anything. Plus, the current marine ones are all >30 years old. They need to be replaced, eventually.

I'd rather he just close down another one of Bush's pathetic failures, but *shrug* it might not be the most prudent thing to do. The point is, though, that the project ballooned to $81 billion because of Bush's incompetence, not because of Obama.

It's interesting that they're so far over budget on the current order of redesigned choppers that the law requires a budget review to determine if spending more than eleven billion is in the interests of national security. I wouldn't be surprised if someone got a small chunk of change to "accidentally" allow schematics of the current generation loose on the internet in anticipation of this national security / budget review. Oops, someone has plans to the current choppers, looks like we MUST spend eleven billion to complete the new ones. I bet the contractor is absolutely heart broken over it

...uh oh, I'm starting to sound like Dave :Q
