Someone tell me how my internet got faster after i added router

This is going to sound strange, I have a cable connection which is rated at 10mbps(1250KBps theoretical top speed) and was always getting 800KBps top speeds from known fast servers, if my g/f was also downloading something at the same time from a fast server we would both get about 500KBps. All in all about what you would expect from a 10mbps connection, now it gets wierd though.

I decided to buy a router because i have a PS3 and my ISP only provides 2 IP's so i kept having to turn my PC off whan i wanted to go online with my PS3 and that got old real fast so i bought a router. Its a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54GL and i never ran it for longer than 10 sec before flashing the firmware to Tomato. After setting it up and getting the PC's connected and working fine i added a new HDD to my computer, long story short i ended up reinstalling both my OS's. This is when i noticed that during the updates i was seeing d/l speeds of 1500-1800KBps, i didnt think much of it at the time and thought it must be in kbps not KBps. After finishing the installs i installed all my steam games again as i accidentally wiped them during the OS reinstalls, they were downloading and updating at 1500-1800KBps and now that i was in my OS i confirmed this with network monitoring software. Note that now when both me and the g/f are both downloading from fast servers we each get about 900-1000KBps. So how did my internet connection double from adding a router?

The only thing i can think of is that the modem was not effective at providing 2 IP's and this slowed it down, as now my router takes only 1 IP and splits it so the modem no longer has to provide 2 IP's like it was before.

Your provider upgraded their service. 10Mbs is around 1MBs. If you're getting 1500-1800kBs then your service is probably 15-20 Mbs.

I realize this could have happened but really what are the chances that in the 30 min i had the network down they upgraded the speed? Ive been living in this place for 2 years and the service has alwasy been identical, im not complaining but thats one hell of a coincidence if that is what happened. Im going to call them and see what they say its driving me nuts now lol.

When they upgraded my home internet from 10 to 15 Mbps my actual was horrible signal loss for 3 weeks and then no connectivity for 2 weeks! Yea I was mad!

They don't tell you when they're gonna do it they just do it! Be merry!

What is more likely is that they upgraded the service but your modem didn't adjust to the new upgrade until you turned it off, which reset it and forced it to check the provider for new settings/speeds.

It probably has to do with how the ISP distribute the Bandwidth when One his using two external IPs.

If it is too fast for you ask them to reduce the Bandwidth.

i figured it out! I had a 10mbps plan for the last 5 years, they switched there plans a few years ago to 7.5 and 15mbps with no 10 offered, they had me on the 7.5 for the last 2 years since i moved in but now they added alot of hardware in my area since there are alot of apartments being built near me so they upgraded my service to 15mbps, and it was just a huge coincidence that it happened in the 30 min i had my network down to add a router.
