Allrighty, after quite the episode of problems (resulting in a 50-some-post thread here) I finally got my comp running happily and as it should... Now, however I took my 3DMark03 score (5678) online and compared it to the other computers that are near-identical to mine and found that the top score for such a puter was 6812... that's a lot higher than mine. The only difference I could really find between the systems was that he had his 128MB Radeon 9800Pro clocked at 478/399 whereas I can't get past 399/359 without artifacts... did he just get a far more overclockable GPU or is there some trick (cooling?) to get it higher without artifacts. Thank you all for your time and, hopefully, for some form of reasoning.

What card did you get specifically? He probably has a better quality card and a lucky one at that.

How is your computer cooling? Any extra fans?

He probably got his TOP SCORE on a FRESH INSTALL with minimal software and everything else. NOT PRACTICAL for computer usage but built to maximise his 3DMark03 score. He probably also used drivers that gave the best speeds also. What drives do you run?

Umm..his OC is tremendous compared to yours. He is probably using a great cooling solution (ohase change). Your scores are in line with your clock speeds and setup.

Also he probably got artifacts.

I got a 6497 with a 2.8C@ 3.6 and a 9800 pro @ 411/375

You got aa/af and it on LOW SETTINGS in the ati control panel? Turn it to perfermance tab (far left) and AA / AF OFF.

I have the 128MB 9800Pro as he does with the same versions of DX and such... he has slightly newer drivers, though it doesn't say what exactly those drivers were...

As far as my system... the vid card is factory cooling, I have 2 fans on the side of my case under the window, cpu fan, PSU fan, and that be the extent of it.

My comp is a fresh install as of yesterday, heh... for those that saw my post trying to get it running properly...

I think the suggestion of the "Performance" settings probably ain't too bad an idea... that'd probably be a big boost alone...

If I put in a new cooling system, will it go farther without artifacts, is that how that works? Also, I have my Athlon XP 2400+ OC'd to 2.15GHz... if I put more cooling on that, can I run that higher as well? Thanks for all the advice/ideas!

Lol, thank you...

Actually, I just got done with 3DMark03 and with the sliders for OpenGL and D3D set to "Optimal Performance" I actually got a lower score... Anyone know of any super-fast drivers or have any advice on the above questions? Thanks!

I'll say this once more. Changing your settings is not going to get you anywhere near that score. What was the OC on his CPU. Again he is most likely using a phase change/ good water cooling solution.

what sound card are you running? 3dmark2k3 scores can be lowered quite a bit by not using an audigy/audigy2

edit: on a side note, does your system play all your games at satisfactory resolutions/eye-candy, if so don't worry about it, 3dmark just gives you bragging rights to those who don't already know that it's SYNTHETIC

Actually, soundwise, I'm using the allmighty Onboard Audio... because of which 3DMark03 won't even run the sound test...

The system runs really well, but there are always those little issues with UT2k4... screwy programming says I... Are there any tricks to making that game run good on ALL the levels?
