If the malicious script had gone undiscovered, it would have disabled monitoring alerts and all log-ins, deleted the root passwords to the approximately 4,000 Fannie Mae servers, then erased all data and backup data on those servers by overwriting with zeros.

I can only imagine the kind of panic that would have ensued after this :Q

WOW! That would have made quite a mess of things. I assume the offsite backups would still have been ok though.

It wouldn't have managed to finish a full pass before discovery, which means that the data would have been easily recoverable. Still lots of panic, mind you.

It's no surprise that Fannie Mae inspires (perhaps even encourages) low morality in its employees...

Assuming the script would have kicked off in the middle of the night, I think that the pure shock factor would have taken a while to get over.

I think this would have caused some pretty serious damage. Plus, while all of this is going on and the engineers are running around freaking out, theres the "WHAT IS CAUSING THIS" factor... You wouldn't even know which server was executing the script.

They'd lose at most 1 day of work. At the very least, a full backup is done once a week and incrementals are done every night. Then the tapes are shipped offsite.

i find it odd that this doesn't happen alot more.

People are mostly good, despite Hollywood and CNN's assurances otherwise. Society wouldn't work if people were mostly bad 🙂

Not at every place I've ever worked 😀
