Someone please recommend a STABLE Router/Wireless AP/Switch

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. Especially reviews of consumer network gear. People will scream, yell and scream that their router sucks.....but yet never admit they didn't type in the key correctly.

When it comes to networking (shamefully) most all problems are user related and not the hardware.

BTW, scrolling through the first five pages on the reviews on newegg.com suggest quite a few reboots on the Buffalo. It looks like I?m reading reviews for my Netgear. I don't how many of them have the DD-WRT firmware though.

I'm pretty sure I?m getting the Zyxel 550, and I?ll probably order it tonight. If it locks up on me I?m getting the Buffalo the next day, and I?ll post on here saying how right all of you Buffalo fans were =) Deal?

If you order the Zyxel and have any questions about set-up, call their tech support. They should solve any issue regarding getting it to work with different makes/models of your other equipment. They've been GREAT with me. The 550 has been stable for me (confirming other reviewers raves) with no resets in many months (firmware 1.4). Firmware 1.3 is also a good one if you want to play with it, some people prefer 1.3 with their other equipment.

I just ordered the Zyxel 550 from newegg.com. Free 3 day shipping! Gotta love newegg!

I did a few more searches and skimmed all 66 reviews on newegg, no mention of any periodic reboots from anyone. I'll be sure and put the 1.3 firmware on it first thing.

Again guys, I really appreciate all the input! I'll keep you posted on how this thing works out.

Luke

I put the dd-wrt flash on my buffalo router last night and its humming along just fine. Nice I can finally get rid of that amd 2100+ box I used as a file server/dyndns heartbeat server since I bought a 250 gb external drive and this new firmware on the router has dyndns built into it (which works great btw)

This thread interests me as ive been looking to replace my router with something better. How does the zyxel 550 compare to a dd-wrt flashed buffalo HP on many co current connections like when using p2p software?

Well from personal experience, I couldn't recommend a better router (right now anyway) than the buffalo. As far as P2P stuff is concerned, I have yet to make mine even hiccup. Wireless is nice and speedy (not to mention excellent range), very small and hasn't needed to be reset or rebooted in about 4 months.

Well, the ZyXEL came today. Dang is Newegg fast!

Anway, got the 1.3 firmware on it and after that I was good to go in less than 5 minutes. What a breeze to setup. I heard about enough bugs on 1.4 so i'm not wasting any time with it.

I guess now it's just the test of time. I'll let you know if it locks up. =)

Good luck. Hope it solves your old problems. Keep us in the loop...

(currently surfing on the Zyxel)

Well, Counter-Strike would lock up the netgear all the time. Just trying to add a server as a favorite would immediately lock up the netgear. I played CS for a good 3 hours last night, and added several servers as favorites, not a single lock up. First 24 hours with the ZyXEL have been perfect.

The log files are also much superior. It still surprises me how many people try to connect and get free internet!

Well I got a friend that just bough a ZyXEL.

He looked at the reviews at New Egg and statically scored it.

He found that the Buffalo scores 4.4 out of 5 and the ZyXel scores 4.45 out of 5. So he decided to get the ZyXel.

He paid more than my Buffalo High Power.

Since my unit a perfectly stable, I cannot compare Stability.

However, it is clear that I get better range and bandwidth from my Buffalo (and I can do the advance DD-WRT stuff).

😉

You already had your one "chime in." 😛

I haven't tried the buffalo yet, but I'm sure to soon. In the past, people that have complained continuously about their wireless networks, amazingly stop calling me the instant I swap in a Linksys WRT54GL flashed with OpenWRT.

My problem is that several times a day, I have to reset this thing. The connection, both wired and wireless, will just drop.

Certain websites will lock up immediately, and strangely enough in Counter-Strike Source, if I try to add a server as a favorite, that will also lock it up on the spot every single time without fail.

I had the same problem. It belonged to some in-laws that I visited for Thanksgiving. One web forum would make it lock up pretty much as soon as I tried to load the page (not AT forums though  ).

I'm currently using a Buffalo "HP" unit as a hub and access point, with routing done by a computer. It works great for what I use it for (wireless access point) - better than a few other devices I had. Don't know about routing because I actually never tried it a single time. I've had so many routers of various brands be problematic that I gave up on using them totally and just use a computer. Only issue I've had was, ummmm, last one died on me because the MSI socket 370 board's capacitors burst after a few years of reliable service. 😛

Yeah, it's OT, but I'm with ya. I'm rooting for the Colts and the Saints, I guess in that order. But come SBS, who knows?

PS, I'm flashing my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router to dd-wrt any day now. It's true.

Meh, it works and does what I need. Home PC is just for the occasional gaming, doing taxes, accounting and porn.

I don't wanna muck with this crap when I come home. Work is work, home is home.

Well, it's been almost two weeks and still no lockups. No problems of any kind.

However, I finally got fed up with my 3 year old D-Link DWL-G510 (vA). Drivers for that thing stunk, and you had to use the windows wireless zero to use WPA.

I just got the ZyXEL M-302 in the mail today. My signal strength went from around -71db to -48db. My laptop in the same location was -55db. That just goes to show how cheap that little -2dbi antenna on the D-Link was.

The wireless software for the ZyXEL card is pretty good with lots of options. WPA with AES didn't work well on the D-Link, but on the M-302 it's pure pleasure. 108mb isn't too bad either =)

I am a huge fan of ZyXEL from now on.
