Using something as simple as a pringles can, you can draw a connection from quite a distance, so don't be sure it's your immediate neighbors. You can always use WEP if you don't mind losing bandwidth, or ban IP address. Heck, you can even try changing the network name to something hard to guess (instead of "default") and he may not be able to figure it out.

i bet it was probably with their laptop snooping for unsecured WAPs... then again, considering wep was disabled, the signal probably went a fair distance (practicallynetworked.com's review said turning on wep cuz throughput in 1/2)..

changing the network name to something hard to guess is useless. There are softwares out there that can sniff out your wireless network name, and WEP is not 100% secure. If this guy is truly a hacker, you will see his IP address soon.

The reason I mentioned it last is that it's a quick fix that might work on a casual bandwidth theif. Not everyone knows of these network sniffing proggies, and if he does, then you can resort to IP banning or WEP encryption.

Saying WEP isn't 100% secure is a no-brainer. No network on earth is 100% secure.

yes, but in terms of security 802.11b is a big gaping wide open hole. If you don't want guys getting into your network then don't use wireless.

from what i understand of the little reading ive done looking into getting 802.11b stuff, if you grab enough encrypted data, even using 128bit wep, you'll eventually be able to crack the key/passphrase. is that correct?

yes, that is correct. Cisco does some proprietary stuff to get around the WEB vulnerabilities.

Wireless by its nature is very susceptible to hacking. If you're not comfortable with this, stick with land lines. WEP and WEP 2 will make things a bit harder to crack into but they are far from infallible. They are usually enough for home users, as there aren't many people who will spend the time to break through WEP encryption just to get in on your internet connection. It's more of a concern for corporations with sensitive data.

yikes! if that's the case, i guess it'd be a good idea if you're really worried to change the key/passphrase often.

Its prolly your neighbor or someone close by, cause those linksys routers dont have that great of range, go checks your neighbors place out and see what turns up.

Also check the latest Linksys firmware to see if they have a MAC filter with an "allow only" option.

man, i would have at least freaked the guy out before d/c'ing his access... maybe check out his shares, and if he's running windows, doing a net send to him with "i'm watching you. don't think you're getting the internet from me for free! i can triangulate your exact position right now!"

anyways... the only thing i would suggest is to change yout password to something even LESS obvious... linksys and linksys2... i would have guessed that password right after. make it a little harder (l1nksys, link-sys, *be creative*).

no no no... my password is neither, i meant that the essid was linksys2

how do you do a net send? i wanted to do something like that... but having only the local ip address and a different domain name wouldnt let me access schtuffs

that doesn't mean you can't find out what workgroup this guy is in.

you can find out a lot of things by sniffing him back, what he's accessing, and if you analyze the packets long enough, you can trace where he's going, what he's downloading, uploading, etc, etc, etc.

as for net send, drop down to the ms-dos prompt and type without the quotes "net help send". that will give you the help dialog for that option of the net command.

and no, i'm not an l33t h4x0r. i just happen to know certain IT specific information. pick up a book about hacking if you are really interested in this stuff, but if you ever work in security, i hope you are really good with politics. i spoke to the director of security at my workplace and he's had to deal with hackers, crackers, fbi, police, cia, internal politics. i walked away from that conversation with this, "if i had said the wrong thing, the entire hacker community can attack the corporation and bring it down." pretty powerful.
