so i got a befw11s4 (linksys wireless AP router + 4 port switch)...

4 computers are online in my house, so i set the dhcp table to accept 4 users.

so now i find that 1 of the users aint me!!!

i wish there was a way to manually adjust what mac addresses can use the router or not, but instead, its the other way around ( you can block individual mac addresses )

so what should i do? i have his mac address... i can just delete it, but what if he just keeps coming back?

should this be in OT or networking?

uhhh... why not just trace the cable? I dont understand how you can connect 4 PCs to a 4 port Linksys, isnt one port shared with the WAN connection?

It's wireless. :)

ah ha, makes sense now. Well then, can the wireless ones connect 4 + broadband, or 4 including broadband?

<== snickers

J/k. Why don't you just trace the IP and block it? Have you tried allowing just the ip's assigned to your own computers? How much internet is he stealing?

yeah, change the IP scheme. It is awfully hard to steal the internet when you dont have a correct gateway.

DO you have your WEP enabled? I have the older setup, with the 4port router and the WAP11, the WAP11 takes up one IP from my router.
Maybe this "someone" is your wireless part of the router taking up an IP address?

if you dont want to worry about taht, why not go the Static IP route? since you're not dealing with a large # of pcs.. then you can filter the ip address ranges you dont want accessing the net.

change the SSID to something else. uh.. do that WEP stuff.. were you sharing anything? just in case, do a anti-virus scan just to be on the safe side.. got weirdos out there. use firewall software as well.

you could put that ip addy in the demilitarized zone of the router and give us the IP. I'm sure you would know quickly if it was one of your PCs.

You might want to post this in networking, someone there can probably help you.

Don't 802.11b routers have some way of making each pc connecting authenticate? I thought that was one of the things I read in pcmagazine, in their article about unsecrured wireless networks.

i think that's wep.. where, on each client computer, you have to put the wep key so you can communicate with the router.

edit: you can always get that zonealarm pro stuff, and enforce it on the router.. since it requires a license #, only your computers will be able to access the router.

nah, taht guy aint one of my computers. i have a max of 4, so i allow only 4 dhcp users at a time.

all my computers start w/ akumax-******

this guy is "Dady"

damn i wanna find this guy... probably like my neighbor across the street or something (im in a residential area)

let him use it for a month.. then make him pay :D

static ip.. need to learn more about networking... :p

edit: yeah i could just block his mac address (this isnt the 1st time this has happened)
but he can always go to frys and get another 802.11b nic, then id be playing this game again

What's the range of an 802.11 peripheral? You mentioned you live in a house so it has to be someone in a house nearby, right? Hunt their ass down.

First, ask your neighbors, maybe you can split your inet bill. be civil about it, not anti-social.

Then, change the IP of your wireless router. then, disable your WAP capibilites, you dont have any wireless comps, do ya?
That should fix it, but the first one would be best.

Not nessecarily. With a high gain antenna, you can pull in 802.11 signals from pretty far away.

as someone asked before, do you have WEP enabled? i thought the client had to know the WEP key in order to access the router.

using static ips is easy..

just disable the dhcp in the router..

on each client computer (at least on win2k pro, might be different on win9x/me/xp) goto the start -->control panel --> Network and Dialup connections --> goto properties of Local Area Connection

choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) --> click Use the following IP address (ex. 192.168.x.x), subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway is the router's ip address

for the dns servers, check the router status page and jot those down and enter those in the two fields.

that's about it.. and go back into the router.. on the advanced tab (at least on the befsr41), use the "Filtered Private IP Range" and list the ip address ranges you wont be using.. this will prevent anyone with those ip address to access the internet thru the router..

edit: someone correct me if i failed to mention something.. pretty simple.

blah, problem solved :p

i just enabled wep on my 2 wireless computers, put in the keys and they're set. (i tried using the wireless computers to see if wep did anything, yup, no connection if you dont have the right key :))

1st thing i did was change the router's password... man id be SCREWED if i didnt do THAT!!! c'mon.. default password = "linksys" :Q

thanx for all the help you guys! (this was the right forum :D)

edit: id proably have to check at least 10 houses around my neighborhood asking " hi, are u using my internet? want to help pay? :D"

i also meant i changed the pw on the router when i 1st got it (like few months ago) :p

default router name was "linksys" so i changed it to "linksys2"

OMG.. you serious. you didnt change the router password?

good that everything's working now...

now all you have to do is find out who was stealing your inet..
