For some reason I can't help but think of a certain immensly popular FPS game whose title concerns the time period of decay for radioactive isotypes.

This part is the biggest joke. Nanotechnology for detecting biological weapons is a waste of good research dollars. Sure it might be possible to build detectors that small, but the problem comes in preparing the sample. The smaller the sample, the bigger the device needed to prepare it (think car sized equipment strapped to your back to prepare a nano sized sample). Plus all nanotechnology research is focusing on small reactors and not speed. They use technology that can tell you that biological warfare has been used - 2 hours after you die from it...

I've currently am working on detecting the warfare fast. My research group can detect anthrax in just under 3 minutes - ten times faster than ANY other machine and 50 times faster than the machines that they are trying to make nano sized. Fast detection is is toaster sized equipment - not fiber sized.

I wonder what their proposal was like? Did they just bring a bunch of Ironman comic books and say, "Wouldn't it be cool if you could have this?" "Give 50 million dollars and we'll find out if you can?"
