<< CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? The Army is hunting for a new military uniform that can make soldiers nearly invisible, grant superhuman strength and provide instant medical care. >>

<< which could detect threats and protect against projectiles and biological or chemical weapons. >>

<< Supercharged shoes could release energy when soldiers jump, propelling them over a 20-foot wall. Micoreactors could detect bleeding and apply pressure. Light-deflecting material could make the suit blend in with surroundings. >>

and all within the next five years

<< The school said Wednesday it has been awarded a five-year, $50 million dollar grant to develop the armor, >>

For some reason I can't help but think of a certain immensly popular FPS game whose title concerns the time period of decay for radioactive isotypes.

<< which could detect threats and protect against projectiles and biological or chemical weapons... All this would be achieved by developing particle-sized materials and devices ? called "nanotechnology" ? nestled into the uniform's fabric. >>

This part is the biggest joke. Nanotechnology for detecting biological weapons is a waste of good research dollars. Sure it might be possible to build detectors that small, but the problem comes in preparing the sample. The smaller the sample, the bigger the device needed to prepare it (think car sized equipment strapped to your back to prepare a nano sized sample). Plus all nanotechnology research is focusing on small reactors and not speed. They use technology that can tell you that biological warfare has been used - 2 hours after you die from it...

I've currently am working on detecting the warfare fast. My research group can detect anthrax in just under 3 minutes - ten times faster than ANY other machine and 50 times faster than the machines that they are trying to make nano sized. Fast detection is is toaster sized equipment - not fiber sized.

Just let me have my chaingun 😉

Hey Czar, is that a military plan or an X Files script? 😀

<< 50 million dollars will buy a bunch of wacky weed which I think these students have been hitting too often >>

i think the work is being led (and done) by professors, not students.

I wonder what their proposal was like? Did they just bring a bunch of Ironman comic books and say, "Wouldn't it be cool if you could have this?" "Give 50 million dollars and we'll find out if you can?"

So it's likely they're not smoking wacky weed, they develop their own synthetic drugs. Is that what you mean?

Not realy sure, but it would make one hell of an xfiles show 🙂
