Someone I have never met used my Company as a Reference. What to do?

Being sued because I made up a story about someone who made up a story about me is just the type of thing that makes me pull my hair out! I almost wanna be on the news for that just to get the message out that the system sucks.
=)

I'm sure it's not an accident and it's a fake reference because from looking her up on Google she lives in the area the company is listed in, and she actually went to my school? Several years younger though, and I'm still sure I don't know her, as I've seen her photos now.

yeah why make a story up? the truth is far worse then anything else. just tell them you have never had anyone by that name work for you and you have NO idea who they are or why they have you as a referance.

that will get there application thrown away.

Futhermore, there are laws regarding employment verification. You are limited to what you can and can't say. I think you are limited to verifying if and when they worked for you, and if they are on a re-hire status. Anything else could be slander. YMMV, obviously I'm not a lawyer. :)

I'd be very carefull what you say about previous employees (granted the person never worked for them), YMMV.
