someone here just paid $400 for these services

she is putting up a website for her photography biz and she paid this:

$100 for the template
+$200 for the client proofing and shopping cart feature
+$100/year to host

good deal? scam? apparently she is dealing with "bludomain"?

pretty decent.

A good independant webdesigner will run you $125-$150 per hour, they probably knocked it out in 30mins but charge a straight 3 hours for the job.

she says 300 gigs of space and 6gb bandwidth - forgive me i'm not 100% up on the lingo and neither is she. you guys are my connection

Template or not, getting a site like that for $500 is a good deal. You'd have to find work-at-home freelancers with nothing better to do (read: used to be me🙁 ) to get a price like that. On the other end, the developer makes out pretty good for a template workup.

Looks like a decent deal to me if she is serious about her photography. I've seen a lot of crappy looking sites by professional photographers.

It's actually probably 300 mb and 6gb of bandwidth.

I hate cookie cutter stuff.

Do they do any sort of customization for the individual site? What about a logo, does she have a custom logo, and will that be integrated?

I don't like the flash personally...I've never liked flash much. I prefer a simple straightforward approach.

Depending on how much business she does and what her budget is, I would say going to a graphic designer would be best.

I designed my own website, logo, business cards, letterhead, etc. The only thing I don't have is a shopping cart thing - there are websites available that I can just setup to look similar to my website and sell photos from there - however I am very picky about my prints. I would rather just take orders myself and have them printed at my lab of choice. I need to have some samples printed from a few of these sites to see what kind of quality they offer.

Anyway obviously she couldn't design everything herself - luckily I have been using photoshop since version 3 and have some graphic design experience, so it doesn't cost me anything but for hosting.

I think though that having a business she needs to have a logo and other materials which go with that.

That's my .02

Again I appreciate the insight, gentlemen.

I sent her the link to this thread so there was a hottie viewing Anandtech today.

QFT...too many people don't understand that what their 12 year old does with even a 'real website not myspace' is hardly web development.
