A man shot in the back 35 years ago has died of complications from the shooting and his death has been ruled a homicide ? but prosecutors fear the trail for the suspect has long ago gone cold.

I think the news article skipped the "how" part... We got the Who, What, When Where and Why...

I think the How part would be important to the story. There's just no way an otherwise healthy guy dies from a wound suffered 35 years ago. Major scar tissue on his colon that caused a weak spot that held for three decades only to be compromised by a bad taco? WTF? That doesn't make any sense.

People have surgery on their colons all the time and they're usually fine after a few weeks. This guy was 35 years healed and somehow his death is related to that incident? No way.
 
Hmm in Illinois there are laws that prevent a death from being ruled a homicide if the death occurs after one year of the incident. Hard to believe some sort of statute law isn't around in Texas to prevent this as well. Then again there are many things in Texas that surprise me.

Why should there be a law like that? If it can be proven that the bullet is what caused the death, even years later, why shouldn't the person who fired the bullet be held responsible?

Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman with the Denver District Attorney's Office, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that her office might file charges if evidence and witnesses can be found.

Ehh...he didn't have a colonoscopy. His colon ruptured, which is a guaranteed colostomy for at least eight weeks, and a real risk of peritonitis -> sepsis -> multiple organ failure -> goombye.
