someone give me a lesson in fan adapters

I have a Lian-Li PC-60 Plus case with a rear 80mm fan... I was going to mod it to 92mm (by cutting the case), until someone suggested just using a fan adapter. I have a few questions about fan adapters... All the pics I see look like they mount into the stock 80mm holes then on the other side they have their own 92mm holes for your new 92mm fan. The part that looks a little confusing is the other end. Do they have a small duct that starts at 92mm and narrows down to 80mm, so the air flow will still be directed through your original 80mm hole? I am right in thinking they mount on the inside of the case? Does the air duct 'stick out' of the back of the PC? Are there ANY disadvantages in going with the adapter vs. cutting the case for a 92mm fan? I was originally wanting to go with a 120mm fan, but the case can't hold it (at least not flush against the back)... Perhaps the "ultimate" solution would be to cut out the case for a 92mm fan, then buy a 92mm to 120mm fan adapter. If the adapter will stick out (inside the case) an inch or so, I could mount a 120mm fan onto it...

-Thanks

The whole thing is a duct really, just with screw holes for mounting the fans on each end. Yes, you can put it inside the case and push the air out through the original 80mm hole. Only disadvantages vs. cutting a hole I can think of would be slight raise in noise from more air being pushed out through a smaller hole....but that would depend on how much air you're moving as far as whether or not it was a noticable increase, or any increase at all....and you'll lose a bit of interior space inside the computer from the adapter being in there....nothing major.

Theres one they made for 92mm w/ 110mm blades
I don't think 120mm can fit without a tight squeeze.

80*sqrt(2) = 113mm, that diagonal is more than enuff to squeeze a 92mm fan in.
92*sqrt(2) = 130mm, i dont think you have enough space to place a 120 mm fan w/ 5mm of clearance on each corner to account for space for the screw hold and a fan ring.

If you use a fan adapter for the rear exhaust, install it on the outside of the case.
That way the air is drawn off the very rear of the case and not 50mm deep inside it.

Just use the Silverstone and it will be easy to install inside or outside the case.

If your not transposring the case to LAN Parties there should be no problem using an
externally mounted fan.

The best solution would be to mod the rear for a proper 92mm fan, that way fan options
for cost and cfm are wide open. You would not be limited to just a Silverstone. The same
is true when using an adapter.
