Someone flipped me the bird yesterday

Background info:
Road: 2 way road, single lane each way
Pass lanes: The lane-dividing lines do break into passing lines every mile or so.
Speed limit: 50mpg

I was driving along this road. I was following a Chevy Trailblazer that was going about 40mph. I waited patiently behind him, with 2-3 cars distance, until we got to the passing lane break. At that point, I floor it to go around him and once in front of him, I'm going maybe 65mph. He decides to speed up and tailgate me for the next 2 miles, while highbeaming me, and flipping me the bird.

What I don't get was what warranted him to become an a$$hole and do all of that. I didn't tailgate him. I waited until the lane divider paint turned into passing lanes, and then I went around him to go about my way. He enjoyed cruising at 40mph when I was behind him, but once I passed him, he wanted to go 65mph+ and ride my a$$.

He is a douche unless you cut him off as you moved back into the proper lane. Perhaps you didn't do this, but you didn't comment on it.

I don't think I cut him off as I was moving back into the lane....for one thing, he flipped me off as I was passing him on his left. I did notice that he was speeding up as I was trying to pass him though.

I would say that the other driver over-reacted, but if you were following at 2-3 car lengths at 40mph that would be considered tailgating. I was always taught to give AT LEAST 1 car length for every 10mph in speed.

That combined with roaring past him - accelerating from 40 to 65 in 4-5 car lengths - could have given him the impression that you were pissed at him for going so slow and wanted to show him up.

Overall, your driving was probably about average for drivers.

There are a bunch of people who drive around with a chip on their shoulder just looking for trouble. I've had this happen to me more than once, but as long as they don't stop to take it further I don't waste time worrying about them.

I'd say the bolded happens to me at least 50% of the time I pass someone. People are fucking egomaniacs and can't stand being passed even if they drive like Mr. Magoo.

I think you were in the right. He was just being an asshole. If someone did that to me I'd probably just slam on my brakes and see what happens (but don't do this if you drive a car which resembles a shopping cart).

My guess is is you passed him, then got in front of him and slowed down enough to get 50mpg, you deserve to get flipped off. :p
