I believe it's illegal to speed up when someone is passing you.

However, you were breaking the speed limit at 65mph by a considerable margin...but still he shouldn't have sped up.

Ahhh man I thought you did something retarded. If the story you lay out is how it happened, you did nothing wrong.

Well, by the OP's account of the story, no the bird flipping doesn't sound warranted. But since the other guy isn't present to give his side of the story, I'll reserve judgment.

Some people just can't stand to be passed. That's the only thing I can think of. Otherwise, he could've just been having a really bad day and wanted to take it out on someone.

this is why i have a machete in my car.

Wait...

What kind of car do you have? Do you have those new fancy super bright head lights that look like they are on high beam and blind the shit out of you? Cause those send me postman.

I was driving along this road. I was following a Chevy Trailblazer that was going about 40mph. I waited patiently behind him, with 2-3 cars distance, until we got to the passing lane break. At that point, I floor it to go around him and once in front of him, I'm going maybe 65mph. He decides to speed up and tailgate me for the next 2 miles, while highbeaming me, and flipping me the bird.

What I don't get was what warranted him to become an a$$hole and do all of that. I didn't tailgate him. I waited until the lane divider paint turned into passing lanes, and then I went around him to go about my way. He enjoyed cruising at 40mph when I was behind him, but once I passed him, he wanted to go 65mph+ and ride my a$$.

mini monday vent...

This shit happens all the time around here. Small dick guy can't stand some one "showing him up" by trying to go the speed limit when he's decided that it should be slower. Then when some one passes him, all of a sudden its just kidding, I really wanted to go 75 and drive up your ass. I generally use no directional and surprise pass since old guys with v8s will often try to kill you by trapping you in the left lane if they see the pass coming.

Last week, I went to pass some one going 15-20 mph (no joke) and he intentionally veered into the oncoming lane as I was passing him trying to run me and my wife off the road. At first I thought he was just one of those potential drunk guys that can't keep his giant truck on one side of the road, but he yelled at us as we passed him at the breakneck pace for 35mph. As near as I can figure he was trying to kill us to keep the roads safe from crazies like us that wanted to go faster then 30.

Some people really, REALLY hate getting passed. I passed a BMW once and the guy flipped his shit. I laughed but after he stopped chasing me I started to wonder wtf brought the whole thing on.

ditto, and if he tried to pass, then the race would be on. Hopefully it'd end by him not being able to get over and smashing into oncoming traffic.

That combined with roaring past him - accelerating from 40 to 65 in 4-5 car lengths - could have given him the impression that you were pissed at him for going so slow and wanted to show him up.

Overall, your driving was probably about average for drivers.

I suppose country roads are a bit different, but in every city that I've driven in, you get 3 car lengths at 70 if you're lucky.

FYI, it was illegal for you to go 65mph to pass him. the speed limit is still the speed limit when passing.

I don't think I cut him off as I was moving back into the lane....for one thing, he flipped me off as I was passing him on his left. I did notice that he was speeding up as I was trying to pass him though.

I'd say the bolded happens to me at least 50% of the time I pass someone. People are fucking egomaniacs and can't stand being passed even if they drive like Mr. Magoo.

if someone does that to me, i brake so that they can pass me faster. where i live, half of the dotted-yellows are in *terrible* spots. to pass remotely safely, you'd have to have been speeding well before you got to the dotted lines.

not that people opt to cross the dotted-yellows often... but i'd like to make it as safe as possible for people if i can. unless i'm in a retardedly fast car, i will never cross a dotted yellow.

Yeah when people pass me I let up on the gas to let them get by faster. The guy was just a fuck...there are a lot of 'em out there.

It could be possible you were going through one of those temporarily reduced speed limit areas and you tried to pass him as he was accelerating as the limit went back to 50. Or he was just an ass.

Just start waiving the glock out the window and see if he's still tailgating. Maybe even let a couple fly if you're feelin frisky.

I really hate when pricks do that, as soon as someone starts t pass they speed up. I usually have to make them sad and actually get on the gas :p

Some of these people are being douches.

Some of these people realize they're going too slow so they speed up, but inadvertently make it harder for you to pass.

Some of the passing situations are straight roads. Idiots slow down on curves, lane merges (even with almost no traffic), lane narrowing, no shoulder, etc etc. Thus they speed up when it's easier for them to drive which coincidentally happens to be easier for you to pass.... For example, I HATE passing on Tahoe roads. Some people will slow from 50 to 30 because of a curve where the sign says 40 or 45. We all know you can drive faster. The road straightens out once in a while for a passing situation, and when I try to pass they speed up. Well yeah my fucking inline 4 can't pass you on a straightaway that easily if you decide to speed up but if you can't handle the curves, let me pass first, I'm not slowing you down....
