I played FF (NES) and FFII (SNES) (US releases) back in high school. Hundreds of hours into each, loved them. Got into PC gaming during college years so missed 3/4/5/6. Got a PS1 and played FF7 like crazy. So much to do in that one outside the normal storyline, grindy but fun. It was also the first 3D FF making it shiny and new. FF Tactics also hit during this time and played even more of that than 7, absolutely loved it.

I got 8 (used, thankfully), played less than an hour and hated it.

Haven't played any since then, got back into PC gaming instead.

What about trying the english translated FF4 and FF6 on SNES nowadays? I'm thinking of doing so, to get at that extra challenge.

Play Final Fantasy Tactics, on an emulator if you prefer. Then once you beat it, play the FFT 1.3 mod, since you seem to enjoy difficulty. There's a thriving community at insanedifficulty.com.

FF6 BNW is another good mod.

I haven't played FFVIII, but from what I've heard it's not one of the better Final Fantasy games. So the other posters might be right that the problem is you're not playing one of the better ones. VI and VII are generally the most universally loved of the FF games, so they'd probably be a better place to start. I actually think the SNES sprites of VI have aged better than the primitive PS1 3D graphics of VII, so VI is what I would go with first.

Or, if you want a shorter game where you don't have to grind but is every bit as good as FFVI, just go with Chrono Trigger!

Translated FF6 is exactly the same as American FF3. They did not make it easier or dumb it down.

As for Final Fantasy 4: As someone else said, the DS version and the Steam version are difficult like the original was. Plus they are in 3D and have that Augment system. As well as built in maps along with mapping rewards, and a much cooler Namingway dude.

Do NOT get the Steam FF6. Its ported from the Tablet version and it stinks something awful. I think one of the remakes for PS1 or PSP would be better.
