Someone explain Super pi numbers to me

I have an X3 @ 3.8Ghz that does the 1M test in 18 seconds but my C2D E5400 @ 3.5Ghz did the test in 12 Seconds. Does that mean the C2D is just faster all around? I'm playing with this new processor and it feels so much slower then my I7 even at 2.66ghz. What gives?
 
C2D is faster than phenom II clock for clock in superPI. that shouldn't surprise you, we've known that for a long time. IIRC superPI only uses one thread, so the number of cores is mostly irrelevant to the test.

Don't know why, but it's one of those strange benchmark anomalies.

The inverse would be WinRAR, where PhII dominates C2D/Q. Strange.

Interesting to hear that X3 @ 3.8 "feels so much slower then (sic) my I7". I've read several posts where C2D/Q upgraders to i7 have not noticed a performance increase in day-to-day usage, which IMO is to be expected as "typical" usage doesn't stress the CPU much, and there are other bottlenecks, such as storage speed.

It depends. Cache can play a significant role. pipeline implementations may be better. ect.

For the C2D, its large cache can almost completely contain the Super pi program, that might be a significant reason why it goes faster.

The execution of the machine level instructions themselves used in SuperPi could simply consume less processor cycles.

Winrar benching is dominated by ram bandwidth, as are large matrix manipulations, which is why the IMC was such a benefit to opteron and phenom over Intel's FSB based platforms.

Yeah, I had figured the IMC was the hero, but it still strikes me that the performance difference is so huge. And then to see i7 take another enormous step over PhII...

Unless... his E8500 is at 3.8ghz, his E5400 is at 3.5ghz. It is entirely conceivable (to me) that SuperPi does not benefit from the increased cache & tweaks of the E8500, and is simply scaling with raw clock speed. In that case, his E5400 & E8500 scores should be very similar.

E8500 @3.8GHz in 11 seconds versus E5400 @ 3.5Ghz in 12 seconds. I see no inconsistency, the OP could very well have both an E5400 and an E8500.

The question is legitimate, the data do not seem inconsistent. Why are folks so intent on whipping out pitchforks and lighting their torches this good friday afternoon?

The only thread-crapping I sees going on here, is well, the self-evident kind to which some of us are currently attempting to address in a cordial and polite manner...

IF you actually did own all that hardware, then why on earth would you ask such a noob question here? If you know so much about overclocking and have invested so much into it, you should already know as much about the programs you would benchmark them with.

SuperPi likes large cache and/or low latency memory. In fact it just likes low latency all around which is why it likes cache so much.

Getting sub-20s in SuperPi with an AMD processor is actually quite an accomplishment.
