I don't really understand the point and motivation behind it, really . . .

and how do these people afford giving $3-7K to each of their younger relatives?

From Chinatownweb.com

The most important New Year custom is for married couple to give lucky money called 'lay-see' to unmarried relatives, especially children. 'lay-see' is a red packet stuffed with lucky money, which most people believe will bring luck to both the receiver and giver. Children are particularly excited in receiving these lucky red packets. Older family members must also give lucky money to all those who are younger in the family, including those who are married.

um, its just a tradition. Lee Si or "Red packet" need not to be expensive. generally a dollar or two is enough. for closer relative a Five or Ten is plentiful. (of course, it is all in correlation to your income :) )

meanwhile, the amount you give away generally comes back to your children (assume you have any) .

by the way, no one give 3-7k to their own children, unless your last name is Gates and your dad's name is William.

I wish I got thousands. I collect like $10 CAD a relative. Times 10, I collect close to $100 CAD only.

then they're like any other spoiled rich kid who have relatives with very deep pockets.

i'm part of four kids - imagine giving to my family. i don't think we've ever topped out past 150 each.

$100-200 is still a lot, i dont understand why a majority of people say they got "ONLY $300"

i'd love $300, my dad makes me WORK for my money . . . yep, it RULES to be indian

that's because you live in freakin' San Marino. that area is loaded with filthy rich Asian kids that will crash their BMW 330ci just so they can tell their parents that they need an M3 because it handles better.

The reason you see so many Chinese get so much money is that only the ones who get a lot brag about it. The majority of us who don't get that much don't go around talking about it. Plus some of them are just have parents who are filthy rich along with a lot of rich relatives.
