Radar

The sunset tonight did actually look like a thermonuclear detonation. Bright orange glow fading to red/purple against a very dark sky.

No pics, though...I was driving.

check pics DSCF0216 -> DSCF0225

similar colors but it was all concentrated in one area right around where the sun was setting. It was really cool. I used to carry a camera in the car all of the time but since I moved to an apt. complex, I stopped doing that a few weeks ago...not worth the risk of a break-in.

What's going on with the radar?

Nothing!

Since there is no precipitation within the range of the sweep, the nexrad operator has switched the system to clear air mode. It is far more sensitive than precipitation mode and the colour scale is displayed differently. The bloom you're seeing around the site (the radar antenna is in the middle) is ground clutter which frequently occurs at nightime when the ground radiates heat back into space.

Yeah...the air is much dryer than the last several days and it's quite cool out there now...very windy.

heh.

Well...the animation of the radar isn't as cool now as it was earlier when you could see the expansion and the change to orange/red. :)

Yep just good old ground clutter and it always seem to be more prevalent at night. Of course it is picked up easier when in clear air mode compared to precipitation mode. Clear air mode is sometimes necessary down here to pick up light snow showers and flurries. The WSR 88-D also did an excellent job in CA mode picking up the debris from Space Shuttle Columbia. I can't wait until NOAA roles out their new radar. I have heard rumors it might be phased array. Hmm... you live in Maryland. You don't work for NOAA do you?
