P182 case
P5B Deluxe
Asus geforce 7300LE (just to hold me over until the R600s hit the market-only costs 50 bucks)
Silverstone ST50EF-Plus 500W power supply
Q6600
2x1 gig Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 (2.2V, 4-4-4-12)
Thermalright ultra-120 extreme w/ Scythe s-flex sff21f fan
AS5 thermal compound
Existing DVDr, mouse, monitor, keyboard.

What is the part number (newegg) for the power supply extension I would need? I've read that the CPU power might be too short w/ this case if I run it behind the MB tray.

Any other suggestions before I place the order/am I missing anything? I'm planning to run this @ 9x333=3.0 GHz.

Thanks all.

Consider the Arctic Silver Ceramique compound instead. Non-electrically conductive (so safer) and reportedly slightly superior to AS5.

Hard drive?
If you're not planning on Raid, save some cash by picking an ICH8 non-raid chipset board, like the Gigabyte DS3, version 3.3.
Or, if you're still wanting an ICH8R chipset board, the DFI 965 board would be a less expensive choice.

Seconded, though from what I've heard, it can be hard to remove Ceramique later.

Shin-Etsu X23-7783D is even better.

Thanks for the replies, all.

@anotherguy: yeah, I read about those cuts, but I need a machine now :)
@vailr: Yeah, I have an older 320 gig and new 500 gig in a non-raid.

About the AS5: I've used it on many system and am very happy with it. Plus, I have 2 tubes never opened I need to use up :)

Also, I'm thinking about a larger PSU (650W probably Silverstone Zeus series). Other suggestions there?

quadcore's still pretty expensive for little real benefit right now... certainly between now and August nothing is going to change drastically enough that it's worth having quadcore now at twice the cost. I would recommend doing what you're doing with the videocard also with the cpu: get an E4300 for ~$115 and revisit quadcore in four months when the price of entry is more reasonable.

@yacoub: I thought about that, but by then, Bearlake will be out and maybe Penryns which I'd probably go for at that time. Then I'd need to get DDR3 and a new MB, etc. I'm only going to be about $100 ahead doing that anyway. This way, I can have a quad processor that'll hold me for a year or two easily. Then I can give them machine to a family member and build a 45 nm fab machine after the bugs are worked out of the bearlake-based BIOS, motherboards, etc.

The Intel P35 Bearlake boards should be out in 4 to 6 weeks.
P35 boards will all be designed for DDR2 memory ONLY, for a period of at least 6 months or more.
I'd suggest for today: Gigabyte DS3, version 3.3 + E4300 CPU.
Replace existing IDE DVD-RW with SATA DVD-RW.
In August, get the (then) lower priced Quad-core CPU + a Bearlake DDR2 board.
See yacoub's posting:

The Penryn timeline is still further out, to Q1 2008.
At which time: replace the Quad-core CPU with a Penryn CPU, and safely move that CPU to the DS3 (version 3.3) board.
Or, save some more $$ by: ignoring the Quad-core, both now AND next August.
In Q1 2008, move directly to Penryn CPU & Bearlake board at that time.

My suggestion on the quad vs dual core... Buy an E6420 now, and a Q6600 when the prices drop... still get good preformance out of an OC'd 6420 and you can sell it when you ave the Q.
