I knew it wasn't Stalin, Marx makes sense.

and the whole do unto others as you would have them do unto you. the whole golden rule. (it's always used in religion, so I guess it's somewhere in the Bible)
just remember there were works before the Bible, and the Bible borrowed things from several of them. just because it's in the Bible doesn't mean it originated in the Bible.

and please tell me you have better things to do than read all the way throught that Hammurabi's Code.

It's kind of scary that the closest thing some people can get to enumerating their philosophical/religious beliefs is to quote KISS or NIN.

Yikes.

I pity the lot of you.

(Doesn't that just chap your hide, when someone pities you? It's ok to be hated, you can revel in that. But pitied?)

Actually I could go on about my religious/political philosophy at some length. The topic of this thread however is songs that fit your religious beliefs.

Nope, I didn't read the whole thing (today) ... I know of it through study. Basically a set of laws, not a philosophy.

The Hebrews may have borrowed from many ancient texts in compiling the Old Testamnet, but the 'do unto others' phrase comes straight out the Gospels, not borrowed, I'm afraid.

I understand rebelling against organized religion, I find many aspects of their practice and interpretation unacceptable as well. Despite this, I find profound thought and truth in religious writings, and I'm not as willing as you may be to throw out the message because I disagree with the messenger, or their method of delivery.

The fact that there is a Christian philosophy in this song is a prime example of what I'm trying to say. Go ahead and shoot the messenger, try and hear the message..

True, its because modern western society is based on christian religion, but modern society is moving away, taking the best ideas from christianity and few from other religions and few new ones. Its only time till a new religion will come from all this, organized or not.

Most Christians I know cannot believe that I am not Christian. I think it is because I am a white American middle class male. They tirelessly try to convert me, as if I was begging them. Don't we have religious freedom in America? And doesn't that mean that I have the right not to be badgered about it every time some Christian fanatic feels like it?

I have no problem with Christianity, and I never tell anyone what their religious beliefs should be.

Why do non-religious people think they have some right not to have people speak at them? You can find them annoying and hate it when they do it, but you don't have a right to peace and quiet. If you did telemarketers wouldn't exist.

hehe, good point Bober... Yea, it's freedom "of" religion, not freedom "from" religion... also, there's this thing called "freedom of speech"

Oh well, you can't like everything. :|

Someone mentioned that they thought that "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." came from Hammurabi (sp?) I don't have any idea about that, but I do know with absolute certainty that this particular quotation "Do unto others..." can be found in Confucius' Analects which predates the New Testament. Sorry zonker, but Confucius did say it first. However I do want to agree that just because it doesn't originate with the bible does not provide any reason to discredit the entire collection of books we call the bible. For the record, the song that comes closest to my religious beliefs is "Totem" by RUSH, it's on their 'Test For Echo' album. The lyrics can be found here if anyone cares, but I'm too lazy to copy and paste them into a post. (And I think it would make the post too long anyway.) Anyway, this is where I leave, I've said my part and that's enough for me.

People who come to you and try to get you to do the right thing or you go to hell or something are like spam, they are here to give you heaven and earth in return for your money. The EU is looking into getting spam banned.

Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to use you..
like me,
like me.

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me .
Don't judge or question.
You are broken now ,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.

My Gods will
becomes me.
When he speaks out,
he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you.

Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life.
Open my eyes and blind me with your light
and your lies.

Not to bash those that are religious, but isn't this thread about songs that reflect your religious beliefs.

As far as the freedom of speech vs freedom of religion vs please don't waste your breath or prayers on me, yes, IMHO everybody has the right to believe what they want, the right to say what they want, and the right I hold most dearest, the right to get up and leave when somebody tries to preach to me.

Sidenote- I have found the best way to keep people from doing the door to door conversion thing at my house is to ask them if they don't mind stepping inside to discuss it, as the police have frown heavily upon masturbation in public and this stuff really turns me on. They tend not to come back after that.

Analetics of Confucius

Zenmervolt, point me to a verse, I can't seem to find 'do unto others' or anyhting like it... been doing a find with 'Conficius said', just can't find the phrase, some ideas are fairly close... but it's just not there

[edit]

found it...
15:23 Tzu Kung asked: "Is there a single concept that we can take as a guide for the actions of our whole life?"

Confucius said, "What about 'fairness'? What you don't like done to yourself, don't do to others."

not quite the same, but a little different, this says don't hurt other people, Jesus says help other people... Do unto others not Don't do unto others

Was Confucious even a known entity in the middle east at the time? I mean, is iy possible the concept was borrowed?

LOL! Confucious is hilarious, check this one:

<<2:24 Confucius said: "To worship to other than one's own ancestral spirits is brown-nosing...>>

I'm sure he used the term "brown-nosing" in ancient China. :)
