I swear if i ever found out who did it and i had the opportunity to get within striking distance with my baseball bat some asswipe would be going to the hospital.

i noticed 3 charges that i did not make.

1. a shell station for 62.44
2. liquor store for 34.85
3. wal-mart for 53.15

the thing is, according to my bank all 3 transactions were all on march 4th and all done one minute apart, how is that possible???

I had that happen to me a couple years ago. I now primarily use a credit card for my transactions, then pay off the balance twice a month. It's not cool when someone gets your card :p

I feel you, man. Somebody charged $1,100 on our credit card at Bergdorf's.

Thankfully our card company called us to verify if we were making the charges and canceled our card . . . but somehow the charges still ended up on our account.

How exactly does something like that happen, anyway? I'm fairly certain neither my identity, nor my wife's, was stolen. Somebody just plugging random credit card numbers into a store?

Dateline just did a special on identity theft, which was somewhat interesting, albeit said - with the poor schlubs who were being conned into being middlemen for overseas thieves.

That was a Sunday and banks weren't open. Just a guess though, I have no clue how all of that stuff works.

Cashiers could write it down, or the really smart one memorize the numbers.

Scam artists can easily get your name and CC number with a 5 second glance (I know, I tried this with a reformed scam artist)

When help takes your card at the restaurant, it is the most likely time for info to be nabbed (so I've heard)

Yeah, but the weird thing is, it's a Bergdorf's in Texas. I haven't been to Texas in probably 7 years, and I don't think my wife has EVER been there.

I think the first two sets of numbers (8 digits) identify the CC bank. I think.

the first series identifies the issuer type, the rest fill out an algorithm and the last is a checksum number

I had my debit card stolen once too, $1200 drained out of my checking account in one weekend. Got it back in 2 days but they charged the card again a year later after I had closed the account. Got sent to collections and I sorted it out but 3years later I find out that I have a non-sufficient funds on my Chex systems report, which I'm currently trying to correct.

i hate credit reporting agencies. it takes nothing to have something negative put on your report, nearly anybody can do it. but to correct a mistake is a fricken nightmare.

I had that happen once (in Denver actually) and traced it down to a restaurant we went to.

I went straight to the manager and showed him the day, time and transaction.

He found she was doing it to a lot of people............ can you say busted.

Police came within ten minutes.

Get an ATM only card and only use credit card.

I don't see how this helps. The CC can get stolen and used just as easily as a debit.

Who cares if your CC gets stolen? Your money never leaves your account, and you're not liable for anything. With debit card, money disappears from your checking account causing potential NSF and bounced checks. You usually have to wait couple of days to get your OWN MONEY back from the bank and deal with the headache of not having money in your account.

So if someone drains your checking account and it results in any bounced checks, do you get all the NSF charges refunded too (from the bank and the merchant)?

Either way that's a huge pain the ass that never crossed my mind. Maybe I will get an ATM only card...
