Well your browser can be hacked for those disagreeing. I believe another MS vulernability came out that allows remote execution for internet explorer.

But it sounds like you've got something on there. Apply all OS patches and run the normal cleaning tools.

The only way your browsr can be hacked is by spyware, adware, or using it to download a virus... as far as someone else using your browser that can only come after someone has gained remote access to your machine by other means, like entering a port.. for ex. port 80 that is used by your browser. So I wouldn't say that is your browser actually being "hacked"

eitherway its semantics. Just wanted to make sure folks knew you can get hacked/infected by just visiting a web page. You don't have to run or click or open anything. Just going to the page can get you hacked.

For example...
1) person visits page of server I own
2) due to vulnerability in browser it runs some code
3) code rewrites parts of IE to proxy everything to another server I own
4) profit

So in a way a browser can be hacked.

I think Amused would be interested to hear of such a site. He's always asking for links to sites that infect your machine without your consent :D

[Edit] No, I don't want to give Amused spyware or virus, it's in reference to a thread about not running active antivirus software.

When was the last time you ran updates in WinXP? Sounds like you don't have SP2 which probably means you aren't updated to the gills. Zonealarm has a free version of their firewall for individuals that works rather well. Download that and install. Restart your computer in safe mode and run all your spyware stuff and see what happens. It might help to have a free AV program to if you don't currently have one. By the way, http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=33&threadid=1658987&enterthread=y is a great place to start if you need further information.

Hmm, I'll have to find a site for him to "test"
:)

Well, we've apparently solved the problem.
i have adware, spybot, bugdoctor, bitdefender, spysweeper, system mechanic, and pconpoint
Need anti-virus solution as well!

Also, I recommend "hijack this" - while it doesn't work to hard for removing things, it does let you know what's potentially hijacking your browser. A little digging on the net and you can figure out how to manually delete a lot of things that cause trouble.

It's an FBI sting to catch people stealing five year old games. They've been watching you through your monitor. Better run.

He's probably trying to download Serious Sam 2, it's all of a few days old now.
