Hey,

I have a Sony Vaio that belongs to a friend. The HDD is going out, but still works some of the time. I used Win2000's backup util. to create a backup of everything that was on both the partitions of the dying drive. To do this, I put it in an external enclosure and backed it up via USB to one of my rigs' hard drives.

My question is, if I get a new drive for her & restore the backup to the new drive from the backup stored on my rig would her OS be intact?

Otherwise, I could probably just buy a Maxtor or WD HDD and use their utilities to make mirrors and try that route.

I'm basically trying to keep the OS intact via backup instead of reinstall since her computer didn't come with XP Home media and I believe that the serial # on the side of the rig will not work with retail media since it's a Sony branded, off the rack system-maybe I'm wrong.

Help me out, please!

Yes, the OS should be intact if you did it that way. Good thinking.

:)

edit: just be sure to restore the same way.. drop replacement drive in the enclosure. Be sure to partition and format it before you begin. The number of partitions should be the same but if you want to resize any of them, now would be the time.

Thanks for the response, Smilin:)

I ended up ordering a WD drive for her anyway (200GB for $99.50-not bad) but the backup would be option one since it's easy to partition and format the drive in the external enclosure and then just drop it into her machine.

I would stick with the backup/restore method rather than any WD utilities.
