i got a very strange problem and it is starting to irritate me quite a bit

i got an asus a8v-deluxe motherboard with a 74gb raptor and 3x300 seagate sata attached, 1 on the via onboard controller and 2 on a promise pci sata controller - further more i got 2x250gb maxtor sata attached to the same pci controller

every now and then, quite often actually, one of my seagate harddrives just starts reading, i got no idea why

i tried switching cable, tried connecting the harddrive to another controller - i even tried replacing the harddrive! it still does that and it is driving me insane

anyone know how i can get it to stop?

thanks in advance

You should find out what's being read/written on that drive. Sysinternals has some programs that can tell you about file and disk activity. I have the same issue, my boot drive was active all the time even when i wasn't doing anything. Turns out it was the XP firewall and my A/V software writing a log file.

its not like its reading for a few seconds, sometimes it several minutes, i dont think the firewall can cause that - or similar

Does the HD access LED come on? This would indicate whether it is the PC accessing the drive.

The Seagate drives will automatically perform internal self-testing, recalibration and bad-sector scans when idle. You will hear them doing their stuff. I don't think that this can be turned off.
