I have a new setup that will be completed this weekend. The only problem is I have a dillema of what cards to choose. I have an ATI Radeon x1800xt pciE card, and I would like to get a new card but I can only get up to 200 dollars for the card. These are the few cards Ive chosen

Geforce 7900GS 256M at 185.99
Geforce 8600GTS 256M
Radeon x1950xt 512M at 239.99

Now I know that the 8600gts is the newest of the three and dx10 compatible. but i want one that will get me the best fps in my games. Let me know asap.

The Radeon is going to utterly dominate the 7900GS and 8600GTS. The 8600 will probably have an edge in DX10 games, but those are a good year or so off at least, aside from a few tech demonstrations like Lost Planet. You'd be better off looking for a more powerful refresh card when DX10 games are the staple.

Ok, i thought that the radeon would beat them both, but now i am purely budgetted on a 200 base. I cant get the radeon card now. So which would be a better step up from a x1800xt 256m?

XFX and EVGA make 7900GS factory overclocked editions that are both faster and cheaper, from Newegg, then the 7900GS you listed there. If you did go with a 7900GS, the one you have listed shouldn't be it.

Keep the 1800XT until you can afford a 8800. I had the 1800XT 256 and believe me, it's not worth the money to 'upgrade' to a 1950 anything. Just not enough of a jump.

Unless the games you're playing aren't performing to your expectations. I would hold off until prices fell a bit more. The X1800xt is still pretty fast I think, maybe till you save up a bit more and/or the GTS or XT fall more in price.

EDIT
Fraggable beat me to it.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. 1800XT 256>8800GTS 320 and it was a great jump. Totally worth it. I sold my 1800XT for $200 and ended up spending about $75 for it.

It's night and day, the GTS makes all X1800/1950, 7800/7900/7950 cards look like slugs. Good choice :)

i would suggest you keep the x1800xt until the next refresh of cards come out (or until games like crysis come out); it's still a pretty good card, why upgrade to a card that will just put you in the same position in a few months? the 8800's will depreciate once the 8900's come out, but the x1800xt has pretty much lost all the value it will until it's obsolete.

i dont think the 8800gts can make a x1950xtx look like a slug in any way...
