Before I say anything, ive been out of the hardware loop a while....

Im looking for some upgrade help please, right now im running:

1.2 tbird, abit 8k7a+ and 512 of crucial pro, the amb is running 12 x 100 never overclocked it. I also have a radeon 7500.

Looking to spend maybe $4-500 on an upgrade for the system.

Was thinking maybe 512 of somne 3500 ram and what cpu mobo etc for O/Cing?

Thanks a lot.

Are you looking to only purchase a mobo, processor and RAM for $400-$500 or a video card as well?

For RAM PC3500 would be a good choice. Winbond BH5 chips overclock very well. You can get them in Corsair PC3500, Buffalo Tech memory and many others. As for the mobo, I just purchased an Asus A7N8X deluxe from Newegg. The new revision 2.0 board seems to have no problems running a 200mhz FSB. As for the processor, I reccomend you read the forums here a lot. Make sure to get a Thoroughbred B, either a 1700+, 1800+ or 2100+. Certain steppings and production weeks overclock much better than others and everyone has their favorite. I just purchased a XP1700 DUT3C from googlegear for $44. I am hoping it will run at least 2ghz.

For a little over $300 you could pick up:
Athlon XP1700+ $44 DUT3C
Asus A7N8X Deluxe $130
Corsair PC3500 $135

Dont forget a quality heatsink and other cooling though.

Is there a reason to go for amd vs pentium? In terms of bang for buck what you suggested seems really good, but running 1.2 right now would I see a big improvement? Or should I go for something a bit higher like double the cpu speed to maybe 2.4?

Also you mentioned the memory hows this:

Buffalo Technology 512MB 6 Layer PC3700 DDR Memory Module 32X8 (Winbond Module) - OEM - $99
vs
CORSAIR MEMORY XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 512MB 32MX8 PC-3500C2 With Platinum - Silver Heat Spreader - $134

Thanks.

The tbred is faster MHz per MHz than the older Athlons. You can also overclock many of these processors that are less than $75 to around 2.4GHz. If you are doing things that rely heavily on the processor there will be a huge difference.

You can run an XP 2400+ in that motherboard. Check the Amdmb.com Epox forums. I just bought one from Newegg for ~$100 shipped.

Take that proc, maybe overclock it, and drop a couple hundred bucks on a Radeon 9500/9600 Pro or a 9700 non pro. Might be a good way to go.

Depends on what revision. But you said that you were going to spend between 4 and 5 hundred, right? Well you can get a 2700+ (2.167Mhz) for around $175. In my book a little overclocking on a faster processor is a better bet than way overclocking a slower one, in the long term.

I would get-

Epox 8RDA+-88
1700+ t bred- 44
2x256 pc 3200 kingston hyper x- 156

what about a video card lol? I would go for a radeon 9700 non pro for 200 bucks.

be aware, MOST will not go to 2400 without water cooling. more likely to get to 2.3. 0310 DLT3C WMPW or XPMW at excaliberpc will get the job done
