Some times those MS error reports are worth their weight in gold

While printing to my HP 2100xi laser printer my computer would reboot as soon as I hit the "print" button. Restarts are often the sign of an unstable overclock and even though I've been rock solid for 6 months I backed my overclock down just to check. Still the problem persisted.

Upon the next start Windows sent the error report and notified me of a fix for the problem.

Installed the update and problem gone.

Of course in my experience it's only like 1 in 50 times where you get a resolution when sending one of those reports but when it does work it's pretty cool.

I'm curious as to other people's experiences with this service?

It gives resolutions? lol, I had no idea as to what that feature did. . .I thought it was just some bug tracker for them and utterly useless for the user.

I think if there are enough of the same reports and there is actually an issue that can be resolved they fix it. When that happens after sending the report a window will open telling you what to do.

Like I said I think I've had a fix pop up about 3 times since I've been using XP but it restores a little faith in MS when it does work.

Man, I've disabled error reporting and debugging. Oh well, no big deal for me. If I have an issue, I'll fix it.

I had a laptop that was having issues with the video card but I had no clue until th MS error report told me about the fix. So some times it pays to send an error report in.

it can never hurt to send an error report and if enough people send a report on a problem a fix will be made available (or at least worked on).

It never gave me a resolution on any of the time I sent in error reports.
But then, I don't send in many. Maybe about 2 a year or so, thankfully.

I went through a brief period of sending error reports, just for the sake of it, but then gave up. I'm surprised anything actually came of it.

I remember there being a hotfix for using HP printers, but it was for an issue that would cause the print spooler to go to 99% CPU. I wonder if you got the same one.
