some tattoo questions.... EDIT: can anyone recommend a place in So Cal?

so im planning on getting a tattoo, i was thinking about getting something in red, but would it stay bright or will it get dull fast. also, why is it that "standard" tatoo's are green? is there anything bad about getting a black tattoo?

what should i look for to find a good tattoo place? anything else i should know...?

From my limited knowledge, standard tatoos are black, but turn green over time, expecially with the older inks.

A red tatoo will fade over time, but it will take many years.

Green is an old school color. Dont know of many places that uses green as a standard. I have 3 tats, one that is blue, one that is black and yellow and one that is all black. My skin is pretty thick and usually dry so the color has faded some over the years.

The place that did my first two was not that great of a looking place. Make sure they use new needles and you see them take the needles out of the pack. Look at the person who is tattoing you. If they have a lot of tattoos they are usually pretty good. The people just starting out dont have many and you wind up being the guiena pig! Good Luck

Colored tattoos will fade faster than the standard dark blue/black color. It will also depend on how well you protect that area from the sun, so make sure you use sunblock. I've got a colored tattoo that's probably ready to be touched up and it's been about 10 years.

Also, I'm not sure if looking to see if the person who is going to tattoo you has a lot of tattoos is a good gauge of good they are. More often than not, they probably didn't do their own tattoos. Ask to see their portfolio. Most keep pictures of the work they've done. But definitely make sure they use new needles!

One more thing... make sure it's a tattoo that means something to you and not just some passing fad. I've seen quite a few people get tattoos only to regret later in life. It'll cost a lot more to remove it than it did to get it there.

all tattoos fade but you can get them retouched. my black one has faded but you can still tell it is black, it doesn't look green or any other color. imo, colors other than black don't look so good in tattoos.

what state are you in? in nj tattoo artists are required to show you that they are taking a new needle out of its package. it was kind of funny, my artist said something that sounded like it came directly out of a state mandated pamphlet or statement.

about how long would it take for approximately a 6 inch by 2 inch tat? and whats the average price?

Depending on the intricacy and the ability of the artist, I'd say maybe an hour.

i have a tribal band around my right bicep about an inch in width. it took about 1.5 hrs with a little break in between as the artist first did the outline then filled in with a different type of needle after the break. about 5 years ago it cost me $250.

My wife has multiple tatoo's. She hasn't slept around and she could kick your ass mentally and physcially.

I've got a series of four symbols on the inside of my left forearm that are black and they're still pretty vivid, though it's only been a couple years.

I've got a tribal band around my right forearm that's broken by a fire and water yin-yang which has light blue and red in it. It's only about six months old, but looks great.

For AUMM:
In NC they have to be licensed; only 18 yrs of age or older can get a tat; must use new needles (and for them fresh gloves).

Places a tattoo WILL HURT - anywhere close to the bone (ankle, elbow), places you find ticklish, and any design where the artist says it will take over 3 hours.

As for color - tribal ink fades the least (black), but the most important fact is your skin type. Do you burn easily in the sun? Do you have stretch marks from either fat or sudden growth? Those kind of things make a tattoo fade quicker or lose their shape.
