Some stick driving questions

I just started driving stick a few months ago and wanted to figure out a few things. I heard that with a stick you can start off at a high rpm launch, I tried to think this over and thought it would be possible but didnt know how to do it. Wouldnt holding the clutch in and revving screw the clutch?

And can anyone walk me through the steps of spinning my tires with a stick? 🙂
 
instructions for lighting your tires up:
disengage the clutch in 1st gear
rev your engine (4 grand or 5 grand should be good depending on the kind of engine)
let the clutch go and lay into the throttle 🙂



(the previous puts excessive wear on your clutch as well)
 
It took me like 20 minutes to learn stick. Although i didn't have much pratice afterwards, it was a lot of fun. Except getting into first...my dads truck would kick like a horse.

You will definitely be replacing your clutch sooner that if you didn't often do it.
 
On my car all I have to do is rev normally and hold the clutch in half way. But in other cars I get to about 3000 rpm and then let go of the clutch half way thru and increase gas slowly. It should spin.
 
Would the car move if I did that good guy? I can get the starting spin without revving, but I want to know how to just sit and spin, spin, spin all day long....
 
If its front wheel drive, just set the ebrake in the rear. THere isn't a way to guarentee you won't move without a line lock.
 
To stand still and spin, you have to give it gas and brake at the same time in a rear wheel drive car, and pop the clutch.
For fwd, use the e-brake.

Then you need a car with enough power to spin the wheels.

In a 6 speed LS1 camaro or firebird with decent tires, that will cost you a new ring and pinion set 🙂 or roughly $700. ( $300 for the ring and pinion set and $400 labor)





 
cablegod, I just saw your post in the other thread, so I know you speak from experience 🙂 I'm used to doing this in a FWD Turbo 4 (with plently of low end torque), so I get to do this around 2.5 grand 😉 I've heard the LS1's start to lose it anywhere above like 1700 :Q
 
hmm.. in a big engine like those on a Camerno you should launch at about 2.5k rpm to 3k rpm.. usually ricers w/ their 4 banger do it in the 3500-4000 range so it'll kick into Vtec range right away.. a friend of mine launch his Integ. GSR at 6000 w/ clutch slip which is nuts.. but for you somewhere below 3 is good...

As for how to do..:
1. Keep the clutch down
2. Put gear in first
3. Rev your engine and hold at desire rpm
4. release the clutch until it just started to grab.. around 1/2 way I guess.. and when that happen and you see your rpm started to dip because the clutch is starting to grip you gun it and give it full throttle...
5. At the same time pop your clutch all the way up.
6. and prey you don't blow your tRanny or worn out your clutch.
 
do it when its wet in a sparse parking lot or in a big dirt field.

You're gonna have a broken piece of crap car if you do it too much.
 
Just wondering, can you guys in America drive a manual car after learning in an automatic?
Over here in the UK, if you learn in an automatic you have to take a separate test if you ever want to drive a car with manual gearbox.
 
We sure can, most people don't want to touch a stick though unlike most of europe. I don't know why'd you'd need a seperate test though, thats like &quot;I'm sorry you drive a truck instead of a car now, you need a new driving test&quot; 😀
 
nope, I took my road test in an auto even though I was driving manual at the time. All I'm waiting for is my b-day so I can get my license! 🙂
