This. Starfleet is full of explorers. I know if I won a huge lottery tomorrow, I'd quit my job and explore the world more.

Agree, it matters little to me that I live in a plain-Jane home or drive a 9yr old plain-Jane car, what makes me sad sometimes is I know I will die having seen very little of the world, oh well, my belly's full and I've got a roof over my head so maybe I should consider myself lucky.

I wonder if this comes from some primal urge to spread our seed.

Tons of our ancestors were seamen. Explorers searching every hole in the mountains till we met the seas.


Then enamored, the seamen banded together with like minded men to explore the waters till space became friend. In ships at warp 10 in pajamas in red.

Starfleet is all officers. These are all people who do things for the sake of doing them. Let's face it, you have people get PhDs in physics to make $45k a year doing research. They would just end up being the people in the blue uniforms.

There are non-commissioned crewmen mentioned in a few Trek episodes.

there wouldn't be a janitor in the trekverse. toilets/puke/dirty clothing/dirty plates/left overs etc would all be treated the same way - converted to energy in the replicator and that's it.

ok, i don't mean picard would take a shit on his replicator and then order an earl grey tea but the toilet wouldn 't have sewage pipes, the waste would just sit in there and dematerialise straight away - probably the smell too 😱 (they showed the dirty uniform aspect of this in one ep but can't remember it - was replaced witha clean fresh one instantly).

most menial jobs wouldn't exist, if not none.

in DS9 there was a kind of a payment system. or at least a limit on credits. sisko on entering starfleet used his transporter credits to beam home everyday cos he was homesick. maybe that's how it works. ration things to entice you to earn more through work

Even if you got rid of the dirty jobs, there are still people doing menial tasks. Crewmen on starships who do routine maintenance work, people serving drinks at bars and restaurants, etc. People are shown doing construction work as well. There's also the gardener at Star Fleet Academy who's mentioned a bunch of times.

If there are ration credits, that would be a form of currency. Thus United Earth isn't truly money-less society. I never got into DS9 so I never noticed that. I know they did used gold-pressed latinum as the currency on the station among non-Federation aliens. Voyager mentions a credit ration system too, though that was because the ship had a limited supply of energy and couldn't refuel as often.

Boothby! Props for knowing your Star Trek universe. Some people might actually enjoy gardening as an occupation, if it meant they wouldn't have to just mow the grass/trim the bushes and get paid a wage they couldn't possibly live off of.

The replicator system would have to be rationed somehow, I'd imagine, throughout the Federation. The senior officers in Starfleet got nicer quarters than the regular crew, and never had to share a room. Not sure if they actually got more privileges with the replicators, though. It wouldn't surprise me if they did, but that wouldn't necessarily lead to a mutiny. It's not a system where everyone gets everything, though.

as for gardening, some people would do that as they find it relaxing. waiting - no idea, a relaxed atmosphere like 10 forward wouldn't be so bad as opposed to a more rowdy place, plus they generally dont serve real alcohol. would be an easy job and they get to see the quadrant.

as for currency - i don't think it's mean in that way. it's more like you get more than enough from the federation to travel as you want, to live, spend time in the holodeck etc but if you want more you need to put at least a little back into the system that helps you. hell, bashirs father (DS9) was a total waste of space and was able to travel from earth to DS9 on no money.
