Some random old parts lying around

I looked in my closet and found a box filled with some of my old parts. Any ideas what I can do with this stuff?

Intel D945G mATX
Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0GHz (I know, I know, don't say it :p)
LGA775 stock HSF
2x512MB generic DDR2-400
GeForce 6800
Hauppauge WinTV Theater (this must be one of the really old models)
broken DVD writer that only works with DVDs and not CDs
DVD reader
IBM Death...er...Deskstar
Hitachi Deskstar
random cables

I'm not sure this stuff is worth much these days, and it might be more trouble than it's worth to try selling it off. So any ideas what I can build with this assortment of crap? I don't have any spare cases lying around, but I'm willing to buy a cheap case to stuff those into, and turn them into something half-useful.

Help me give my old gear a new lease on life :p!

Just an idea:

Your locale may periodically have "electronics disposal day" where people dump off their old stuff. We do here anyway, so maybe you do too.

Pick up a free case there.

Use those parts to assemble a computer to use for learning LINUX.

Thats what I'd do, have it run Seti@home when idle as well.

Alternatively, you could sell it anyway, donate it to Goodwill or some other organization, or dispose of it properly.

He could use a VM for that. No need to make an entirely separate rig for that.

I actually already use Slackware on my main rig :D. I don't list it in my sig because I boot it from a separate drive.

So far, it sound like finding a free case might be the best bet.

Build back as a humble computer.

Identify a need organization or a person in your community, and give it as a contribution.

I gave most of my old rigs to a none for profit Kindergartens.

I work at a school in the Baltimore City Public School System, and a lot of schools in low-income areas would kill for a P4 computer like that. A lot of the ones we have are P3s with only 128MB of RAM.

You might consider donating it to a local school.

Considering what they teach at schools do they need anything faster?
