Aight, here's the specs on the new build I just made:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (Winchester)
Li PC-65B Case
Seasonic 400W Super Tornado
MSI "K8N Neo4 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset
1 GB DDR (400) PC-3200 Patriot Extreme Performance
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB
Seagate 160GB Barracuda
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive
Sapphire Radeon X850 XT PCI Express

--------------------------------------------------------

Now performance wize, this computer is awesome. Its fast, graphics are GREAT, so on and so forth. My problems are as follows:

- My computer randomly shuts down and reboots every now n then
- My DVD burner won't autoboot ANYTHING
- My DVD burner won't BURN anything, when I burn a CD it gets to 14% and freezes, when I burn a DVD it gets to 1% and freezes
- When I install certain games (City of heroes especially) it installs just fine, but when I start downloading the updates it keeps giving me a .pig (or something like that) error saying I don't have enough space or some bullshit, which isn't true because I have about 200GB's free.

^^Those are basically the problems I'm facing right now, I'm hoping its not hardware failure because I payed lots of money for this stuff and it'll be a pain to re-send this stuff back. Hopefully u guys can help me out, u guys were awesome when I needed help on gettin a good bulid for my gaming. Thnx

"My computer randomly shuts down and reboots every now n then"

Most probably this may b due to a problamatic heat sink fan or Virus/Spyware problem.

check both.

^^I re-installed a new anti virus. I had system works on the comp, then just switched over to standard Norton Antivirus. No difference. The heat sink could be the problem? Someone was tellin me it was the PSU, not enough power for that system Im runnin.

That power supply is pushing it. It may or may not have enough power. 24A on the +12V line is bare minimum.

Is it crashing in the middle of games? Does the screen go black and it seems like the system is still running? Do you get the BSOD?

As far as your DVD drive, I'm thinking it's the cable or the drive that's gone....but it could be your PSU, as well. Try unplugging the non-booting HD and burning a DVD. This should take some of the load off the PSU, if that is the cause of the problems.

As greenagent says above,
Unplug all non necessary hw as a troubleshooting measure
See if problem goes away.
If YES, plug in one piece at a time to diagnose

If no and the problem is still there, disable all your non essential startup progs INCLUDING antivirus and firewalls [make sure you are disconnected from the interspam first]
See if problem goes away
Enable one prog to start at a time to diagnose

What does the event log show about all of these errors, particularly the reboot errors? Do you have files in c:\windows\minidump?

Syl,

I assume that your NEC drive is IDE rather than SATA.
Have you installed the nVidia SW-IDE drivers?
If so, roll back to the M$ IDE drivers that come with XP/2K.

The nVidia drivers are extremely buggy and could be causing most of the problems you described.

Let us know.

EDIT: W00t 1k posts in 5yrs (no neffing)

Ok, so if it might be the PSU, what voltage should I be lookn to get? As for crashing, yes it usually crashes during games, but sometimes when Im just doin normal stuff, the screen goes black and I hear it power down, then boot back up.

Syl,

If you're using any IDE drives, do the driver rollback.
If you're not, it's a non-issue.

As DC asked, are you getting anything logged in Event Viewer?

On a new power supply, you should be looking to get at least 26A on the +12v rail. Personally I use the Antec Truepower 430w, but you might want something a bit beefier than that if you want to spend a little cash.

It does sort of sound like a power issue, though. I would also make sure that you place all your PCI cards as far away from your video card as possible. Your vid card could be overheating as well.

Sounds more like PSU to me, but could be heat, so try them both.

26A on the +12v rail <---Im not sure what that means. Should I just get a 500wat?

If you look on the side of the box for power supplies, it'll have a little table.

It'll have like +5V +12V +3.3V -5V -12V +5V SB.

It'll have Amp rating corresponding to each of them. i.e. 24A, 26A, etc.

You want the rating for the +12V to be at least 26A. Usually cheaper power supplies will give you a better rating on the other rails, like +3.3V, and lower on the +12V so they can claim 500W. But the watt rating is meaningless if you can't get the power to the correct lines. (All your hard drives, your processor, CD roms drives, etc. all use the +12V).

Here's the spec sheet for my power supply....if you scroll down, you can see the table I'm talking about.

What does the event log say? If you're unsure, run MPS Reports and send me the yourcomputername.cab file (see my .sig for details).

You're probably looking at it correctly. 18-19A is right about average. Here are a couple I've found that are 26A or better.

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104155

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103908

A lot of Antec's list +12v1 and +12v2. I don't know how exactly those work. I would guess that there are two separate lines each capable of some load, so the maximum would be the sum of the two, but I'm not sure, so I didn't list those.

look in all the logs and look for red 'X' and yellow '!'.
Report back with SOURCE, EVENT ID, and any text descriptions of the errors that occur with the same timestamp

ok, I did what u said. In Applications I got a ton..the sources were mostly Application Error (event: 1000), MsiInstaller (event: 1015), and EventSystem (event: 4354), and I had one WinMgmt (event: 63).

The security log was clean

The System logs had erros in DCOM (event: 10005), NetBT (event: 4321), Browser (event: 8021), Print (event: 61, 20, and 8)

^^Is that the info you were lookn for? I have tons of these errors, so to put the messages from each would take like days lol, unless u really want em?

For the errors, you need to post the description as well, as there can be many things that cause the prob. The description may well lead to a DISCOVERY

Newegg lists them as:

Output +3.3V@28A, +5V@45A, +12V@26A, -5V@0.8A, -12V@1A, +5VSB@2.5A

(for example)
