Did you close your bank account yet?

Like people have said in this thread, the guy has access to your bank account, and quite possibly other personal information. You really need to look into this.

The question is how can you close your bank account if transfers are in process at the moment with your current money you want to move out of it?

You go down to the bank in question and explain you were the victim of fraud/identity theft.

Yes, that is a problem. I can't close out the accounts b/c I need to have money transferred back into them.

How in the world does this help ? They are going to tell me I can't do anything about it or I have to wait then file that paper. Can you file the paper online or over the phone though as well?

Procedures vary depending on banks. All of them follow the standard procedures, but some banks will be more helpful than others.

Then in your opinion what are the top banks when dealing with issues like this and getting them fixed the quickest ? These banks must include being able to fix the problem over email, online tech support chat, over the phone, and goes to the branch in person. Though you can do whichever method you have time for but all methods are just as successful.

Sucks to hear that. I hate PayPal but unfortunately still use it from time to time.

One tip is to have all email notices activated for your bank/s, CC's and PayPal. Anytime money is moved with my accounts (excluding debit card purchases), I get an email notice. It may not prevent fraud but it at least gives you an instant head's up to quickly contact your bank so damage is minimal.

Apparently my bank is going to credit my account with the amount out of their own reserves while the money is in dispute. Then depending how the dispute turns out they will either keep the money from the dispute to pay themselves back, or try to take my money back. Perhaps after they credit my account I'll conveniently transfer it all somewhere else and leave $5 in it.

What bank do you have? How did you get them to do this? Did you email or call them?

That almost sounds like a mistake, rather than the guy stealing. If you didn't tie this account into Paypal, and someone else did, how did they get your account number?
Either it's theft, like he got your account from your trash or something, or could just be a mistake.

Either way, you bank will probably back you all the way.

Paypal, not so much.

BTW, anyone remember when PaypalDamon would respond to every Paypal-related thread?

Well, 7/8 transactions from my checking and 1/2 of the transactions from my savings have been reversed, so I have like 2/3 of my money back. Paypal is ridiculously lame. One rep gives me a case number. I call back and another rep says "That isn't one of our numbers". Seriously, I don't know who's running it but they all seem clueless.

My bank is taking forever but they are looking into it further. They claimed it might take this long but at this point it's been 7 days and I'm sick of waiting. I have been escalating it up the charts and they are going to call me back. I honestly can't understand how it is so hard for them. I didn't transfer the money, paypal agrees and says the bank should contact them and they will credit back. Yet nobody can figure out how to do it. I'm about to go postal on the bank if they don't call me back in 15 minutes like they said. F paypal.

Anybody with access to one of your paper checks, even cancelled, has enough information to make an electronic debit from your account. What I'm curious about is how this guy managed to link your bank account to his paypal account. As others have said, places like paypal verify a bank account by making a couple tiny deposits and then requiring you to state the amounts. Did this guy call your bank and pretend to be you in order to request a summary of recent deposit activity?

This is why you should NEVER EVER tie your bank account to Paypal, no matter what. At least with credit-card funds, it's not YOUR money, and credit card companies will try their hardest to get THEIR money, instead of other way around.

Or sign up for a second checking/savings account to use for PayPal only.

I have a separate old checking account with literally 2 cents in it tied to paypal. Not much they can do with that.
