Some Photoshop help, por favor.......[n00b here]

I'm trying to make a collage of some pictures. I wanted it to be on a 8x10 canvas. I'd like pictures across the edge, "blended" together. The center would be blank and with words in the middle.

Kind of like this:

It doesn't sound very complex, right? I'm a Photoshop n00b. Any tips?
